18-year-old Timothy Long rushed himself to the hospital Friday morning with burns to his hands after a gas-siphoning scheme backfired on him, according to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Department.
At approximately 3 a.m. the man, who was attempting to steal gas from a boat and four wheeler, peered into a portable gas tank with a cigarette lighter “to see how full it was,” said Heather Benjamin, Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman.
The fumes ignited, and his clothes caught on fire, she said.
