Standoff with sex offender in Guilford
Charged with more sex crimes
Guilford, Conn. (WTNH) - A registered sex offender is facing new charges after he allegedly tried to restrain a woman and sexually assault her. The suspect was finally detained following a standoff with police in Guilford.
The incident began around 2:30am Tuesday when the victim approached an officer on patrol in North Guilford. The woman told police that she had been threatened with a handgun and restrained against her will. She told police that the suspect, Gerald Ignatowski, 57, was drinking heavily she was able to escape when he passed out.'
Guilford police, as well as a SWAT team from Branford, responded to the man's condo at 80 Wauwinet Trail in North Guilford. Police decided to evacuate some residents for their own safety. When police finally forced their way into the condo, Ignatowski was not inside.
Ignatowski was found a short time later in a wooded area near the condo, armed with .32 caliber pistol. Police fired a sponge ball gun at Ignatowski after he made a sudden movement with the gun.

Ignatowski was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital to be treated for minor injuries and to receive a psychological evaluation.
“He does have a criminal history, so we considered him especially being armed he was dangerous,” Lt. Robert Robinson said.

Ignatowski will be charged with Unlawful Restraint, Reckless Endangerment, Criminal attempt to commit Aggravated Sexual Assault, Criminal Possession of a Pistol or Revolver, Disorderly Conduct, Breach of Peace and Threatening.
Ignatowski was convicted in 1985 for sexual assault in a spousal or cohabiting relationship. He served five years in prison.
