An autopsy today showed a 1-year-old boy from the South Side who died early this morning was a victim of child abuse and his death was ruled a homicide.

Jamar Harris, of the 7100 block of South Yates Boulevard, died of multiple blunt force truama, the Cook County medical examiner's office said following today's autopsy.

Jamar was taken unresponsive to the the University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital about 1:45 a.m. with bruising to his body, including on his stomach, officials said. He was pronounced dead at the hospital at 2:07 a.m.

Chicago Police Officer Darryl Baety, a police spokesman, said Jamar was being watched by his mother's boyfriend, who told police the boy had fallen down the stairs.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is investigating allegations of abuse and neglect in the death of a 17-month-old South Side boy Saturday.

Jamar Harris, 17-months-old, became unresponsive at his home in the 7100 block of S. Yates Blvd. and was pronounced dead at 2:07 a.m. at University of Chicago Comer's Children's Hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

You know both of my boys have fallen down the stairs, (half way down as I have a landing), and neither one sustained no more than a bruise and mild rug burn at worse. Little Jamar may have fallen down those stairs, but he was thrown and kicked down after being beaten. Poor little one. So sorry Jamar, you deserved a fair chance at life.

my daughter fell down stairs... she didn't receive a single bruise... but she does have a mild brain injury from the fall.

This poor little darling, I agree, if she fell down the stairs it was after she was beaten and then thrown down the stairs. RIP sweet angel.

Darnell Thomas, 21, of the 7100 block of South Yates Avenue, was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Jamar Harris, and one count of domestic battery for abusing Jamar's 3-year-old brother, police said.

The boy had bruising on his abdomen area and also bruising on his arms and a cut to the mouth, sources said.

The 22-year-old live-in boyfriend initially declined to go to the hospital with the baby or talk to detectives, police said. Officers responded to the hospital at 1:46 a.m.

About 11 a.m. Saturday, he turned himself in to Calumet Area detectives, 727 E. 111th St., allegedly telling police he hit Jamar, police said. The man has a criminal history that includes arrests for unlawful use of a weapon and misdemeanor battery.

Jamar died of multiple blunt force trauma and child abuse, according to an autopsy completed Saturday by the medical examiner’s office. His death is ruled a homicide.

The mother -- who is pregnant with the man’s child -- was at work at the time of the incident and is cooperating with police. Jamar is not the man’s child, police said.

Family is grieving. And I mean no disrespect, BUT, I must ask, did mom not realize her children were being abused by the criminal, motherfucker, asshole? really, I want to know. Her 3 yo was also being abused.

So now as the family mourns baby Jamar's loss, I hope they sit there and realize this didn't have to happen. Babies are defenseless against POS like this, a mother is the first line of defense, and from what I know it appears she failed to protect her children. I hope the one to be birthed soon I hope is fairs far better.
