What did she do to what evidence? Did she wash the blood away from the crime scene? Erase her phone messages? What is the child's prognosis?

LAS CRUCES - A 5-year-old Anthony girl has succumbed to injuries police say she received at the hands of her mother.

Angel - whose last name is unknown - was bruised back and front and head to toe, had suffered bleeding inside her brain and had at least one broken rib when she was brought, unconscious, to Providence Hospital in El Paso on Sunday, according to District Attorney Susana Martinez.

The little girl's wounds also included more than a dozen puncture wounds, what appeared to be a human bite mark on her ankle and scratch marks on her chest, Martinez said. For several days, Angel remained in a coma, in critical condition as doctors tried - unsuccessfully - to relieve the pressure caused by the bleeding in her brain. On Thursday, Angel was removed from life support when her brain activity ceased, Martinez said.

Jessica Barron, 27, remains incarcerated at the Do-a Ana County Detention Center with a bond - increased late Thursday evening by Magistrate Judge Joseph Guillory - set at $100,000 cash.

Barron will be charged today with intentional child abuse resulting in death, conviction on which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison. She had also previously been charged with tampering with evidence in the case.

The alleged abuse bears a visceral similarity with that in the case
of Baby Brianna Lopez, who died July 19, 2002, covered in bruises and 15 human bite marks, after having been raped, her skull fractured in two places, her ribs, legs and an arm broken.But Martinez cautioned against a comparison.

"Brianna was worse because she was five and a half months, had multiple broken bones and, the evidence was clear, she was abused her entire life," she said, adding after a long pause, "You really can't compare one with another. They're both dead - and unnecessarily so. Two young lives were ended, unnecessarily and brutally."

Authorities were called to the hospital soon after Angel arrived Sunday and subsequently arrested Angel's mother, who had remained at home on Par Two Lane in Anthony, N.M. An ambulance hadn't been called until the father of Barron's youngest daughter, had taken Angel to the home of his grown daughter, who immediately called 911, Martinez said.

Barron's two other children, Angel's older brother and her younger half-sister, were immediately taken into state custody Sunday.

It is unclear whether others will be criminally charged in Angel's death. Investigators expect to discover the full extent of Angel's injuries when her body is transported to Albuquerque for autopsy today.

"We know that the healing of the bruises were at different stages," Martinez said. "She had a broken (shinbone) within the last year. It was a spiral fracture. It certainly raises a red flag."

Sheriff's investigators plan to hold a news conference on the case today.

EL PASO, Texas -- Angel Lorraine Jimenez died Thursday night, about one month shy of her sixth birthday. Her injuries were too massive to overcome: a brain bleed, muscle spasms, possible sexual trauma and multiple bite marks.But the injuries that killed her were not the first the little girl suffered.
KFOX has learned Angel was treated for an ankle injury at Providence Hospital earlier this year. Additionally, she suffered a broken leg and the cast was removed about one month ago.
Angel's battered body will be transported to Santa Fe for an autopsy.
Meanwhile her mother, Jessica Barron, 27, sits in the Dona Ana County Jail and KFOX has learned she's taking visits from her family members. She's charged with one count of "child abuse resulting in death or great bodily harm," and a third-degree count of tampering with evidence.

As KFOX reported, Barron has a previous criminal history. She has two counts of theft in her past, one in 2001 and one in 2007. Barron's also pleaded guilty to one count of marijuana possession over 50 pounds, but less than 500 pounds in 2003.
Her middle child, Angel, was a kindergartner at Berino Elementary School in Anthony, NM. Principal Reyes Valtierra told KFOX he was made aware of Angel's death but could not comment without permission from the superintendent of Gadsden Independent School District, Cynthia Nava. Nava did not return calls from KFOX.

A source close to the family told KFOX several staff members at Berino Elementary contacted Children Youth and Families Dept this year regarding concerns about Angel as well as her older brother, Juan Carlos Barron. The source said both children often appeared at school hungry and unclean. CYFD spokesman Romaine Serna told KFOX the agency has three referrals regarding that famiy.
"Unfortunately, we have a history with this mother. The children, youth and families department has been involved with the family since January of this year," said Serna.
KFOX asked Serna why Angel and her siblings were not removed from the care of Barron. She said she cannot go into a lot of detail so as not to compromise the criminal case. But she did say that CYFD is not the entity that would remove children from their home, law enforcement would do that.

Serna said when the department receives a referral, it is assigned a priority and an investigative worker is assigned and responds to the allegations that are made regarding the family. She said the department responded within the appropriate time frame.

Reynaud said Angel's half sister told deputies that the puncture wounds in Angel's back caused the girl to lose consciousness.

"Her 2 year-old sibling told us, 'Mommy hit her with a stick until she fell asleep,' " he said.

Hospital X-rays showed that Angel had a healed spiral fracture on her leg, which indicated that she was abused more than once in her life and that the abuse was "extreme," Reynaud said.

"We believe this child was abused over a period of time," he said.

Spiral fractures occur when a limb has been twisted and then broken. Anytime a spiral fracture is located on a child, it's indicative of abuse because that kind of fracture does not happen naturally, Reynaud said.

Her other children, a 2 year-old girl and an 8 year-old boy who is blind and deaf, are now in the custody of Child Protective Services, Reynaud said.

Barron is a single mother who had a strained relationship with the biological father of Angel and the 8-year-old boy. Police located the father and informed him to Angel's condition, he said.

"It was the mother's wishes that he stay away from the children for whatever reason, but we were able to contact him and locate him and he was present when Angel was taken off life support," Reynaud said.

Reynaud said Barron's remaining children do not look abused but will undergo medical examinations to see whether they have been.

According to an arrest affidavit, Barron allegedly beat Jimenez with a stick until she lost consciousness.

OMG, this brings back so many memories, not many good I'm afraid.

Anthony NM, Canutillo, NM, Las Cruses, El Paso....damn. This was my neck of the woods growing up most my childhood, went to school in the shit hole Gadsden district. I can tell you NM is notorious for the high rate of child abuse.

For a moment I thought I knew this face, she looks way familiar but she is too young. Could be the daughter of someone I knew. Anyhow, she's horrid, vile bitch.

The reference to Brainna Lopez was put pretty lame. That case is so close to my heart for more than one reason. Her death and any child's death from abuse is such a personal thing I hate comparing levels of suffering I think it's hardly fair to the victim.

I wish they'd looked in on Angel more surely they would have seen something was terribly wrong, as injuries were old and healing. The aunt speaks on VIDEO, speaking of the guilt the family feels, and what little Angel will be wearing as she's laid to rest. Breaks my heart, sweet child beaten to death, and for what? there can be no reason to make sense of this.

EL PASO, Texas -- A grand jury will likely decide Thursday whether or not to indict an Anthony, N.M., mother accused of beating her daughter to death.

Meanwhile a rosary for Angel was held Wednesday evening in El Paso’s Lower Valley. Family, friends and complete strangers gathered to pay their respects to the girl.

LAS CRUCES -- She was remembered as a dancer. A girl in love with "Up," the story about the man who flew away with thousands of balloons tied to his home, who could spend a week in a cool movie theater with her father. The kindergartner at Berino Elementary who was full of questions.

Angel Lorraine Jimenez was buried Thursday morning in Memorial Pines Cemetery in Sunland Park, with so many more questions to be answered.
That afternoon, for more than an hour, in a closed, overheated room at 3rd Judicial District Court in Las Cruces, a Do-a Ana County grand jury listened to the details of the 5-year-old's death -- and the alleged abuse suffered by her older brother.

The jury indicted the children's mother, 27-year-old Jessica Barron, who also goes by Jessica Palacios, on charges she intentionally and fatally abused her daughter over a period of four days in late June, tampered with the crime scene, and had abused both the girl and her brother in the past at the family's Anthony, N.M., mobile home on Par Two Lane.

Angel, who was removed from life support June 24, "suffered an unimaginably excruciating death at the hands of her mother," Barron's bond information form read. "She was brutally and repeatedly beat by (her mother). The 8-year-old victim, who is deaf and blind, has been burned with cigarettes all over his body."

The family of Angel and her brother's father, 42-year-old Jesus Espino, who remains in mourning, is now making a push to adopt the boy, said Angel's
Angel's relatives in Canutillo, Texas, never saw any signs of abuse in the few times Barron would allow them to visit her, she said.

When Angel was finally taken, unconscious, to Providence Hospital in El Paso on June 20, she was bruised back and front and head to toe, dotted with more than a dozen puncture wounds and had suffered bleeding inside her brain. At least one rib was broken. Her chest was scratched. There was a human bite mark on her ankle and signs -- authorities will not elaborate -- that she had been raped. After Angel was taken off life support, the family gathered and promised each other they would adopt her brother from state custody.
"I want him with me. I don't want him anywhere else. My whole family wants Charlie to come home with us," Viviana Espino said. She added, "I don't have money. I'm struggling like everyone else. But he will have a lot of love, a lot of caring from this family, no matter what. We're ready for Charlie to come home. He's going to get all the love that he hasn't been getting."

When Angel was alive, Espino said their children's mother "wouldn't let us be alone with them." Now, she wonders if the infrequent contact with her niece and nephew was to guard against them reporting the alleged abuse.

The children's 2-year-old half-sister, who told investigators she had seen Barron beat Angel with a stick until Angel "fell asleep," does not appear to have been abused.
The case remains under investigation by the Do-a Ana Sheriff's Office and the criminal complaint, statements of fact and the results of the girl's June 26 autopsy have been sealed by the 3rd Judicial District Attorney's Office.
Barron faces life in prison if convicted on a charge of intentional child abuse resulting in death.

Indictment: Barron Also Abused 8-Year-Old Son
LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- It was last week when KFOX told you 27-year-old Jessica Barron had been indicted on four counts of child abuse and tampering with evidence. One of the counts was for intentional child abuse resulting in the death of her 5-year-old daughter Angel. But, according to prosecutors, Angel wasn’t the only child abused by Barron. Count four of the indictment said the mother allegedly abused her 8-year-old son. The indictment states that the child who's blind and deaf was burned with cigarettes all over his body.
There was a third child in the home at the time of the alleged abuse, but the district attorney’s office said at this time it doesn't appear that child was harmed. That doesn't mean any further charges couldn't stem from anyone else involved or against anyone who failed to report the abuse.

“Any witnesses or anyone with any information, we're always open to them coming forward, but she (Barron) has been charged and as far as her case, we're ready to proceed,” said Amy Orlando of the Dona Ana County District Attorney’s office.
