Police: 2-Month-Old Left At Party,Teen Mother Charged With Abuse, Abandonment

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- A 17-year-old girl is charged with child abuse and abandonment after leaving her 2-month-old baby at a party, police told Albuquerque TV station KOAT.

The Bernalillo County sheriff's office is trying to determine whether a 2-month-old left at a party is a case of child neglect, kidnapping or both.

The Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office said it received a call from the girl around 8 a.m. Thursday, telling deputies she could not find her child.

Deputies said she told them she had last seen her baby at a party the night before.

Sheriff's deputies said the girl could only think of the first name of the person who may have taken the child. A detective was able to identify that person by looking through old traffic tickets.

Authorities found the baby Thursday afternoon with a 16-year-old girl who had diapers, formula and other baby care items.

"Was it [that] the mother got somehow intoxicated or impaired and forgot the child? Was it the 16-year-old took the child, or kidnapped the child for some other purpose? We just don't know," sheriff's Sgt. Mark Kmatz said.

The baby is now in the custody of the Children, Youth and Families Department.

This girl had no business taking her baby to a party, wtf? is she entirely without support that leaving baby with grandma, aunt, other is not an option? she must think she's playing house with a baby doll. SO she leaves the party without baby and doesn't notice? my beat she was intoxicated had no fuckn clue where she left baby, perhaps even asked this girl to watch baby for her?

At least the other girl had diapers and formula ready to care for baby, and didn't harm baby. The dimwit mother could learn a thing or two by this 16 yo. I really do wonder where are the adults in this picture. A 17 has to face the reality of having had a baby and now is a mother but she sure as heck needs guidance.

I just had a conversation this mornin' with an old timer about a situation like this. I said if the mother thinks she doesn't want her child, give to someone else, as long as it's not a pedo or whatever. We both agreed it should be done legally so no one gets into trouble. But I said that if she's on the brink of killin, molestin, or neglectin the kid, find someone, ANYONE you trust, in order to save the child.

I don't know yet what happened here, but if a 16 year old is capable of taking care of the baby, mom's definatly not. Partyin' was more important than your 2 month old, you're incapable of raising that child.

The baby was found in the 1800 block of Sausalito Drive Thursday afternoon. Police said a 16-year-old teenager who had the baby had diapers, formula and other baby care items all set up.

The mother of the child has been charged with abandonment and abuse of a child. There is no word on any charges against the girl who had the baby.

The baby is now in the custody of the Children, Youth and Families Department.

So... I guess I was one of those rare 17 yr old mommy's who didn't party at all. Or who knew better than to take my baby to a party... or who took care of my baby... WTF?!

my daughers dad and i were 15 and 16 when we had her and always had parties at our house but i never drank or used to drugs...maybe she gave the chik her kid but then changed her mind about it...

maybe not, but if the mom wasn't going to properly care for the child or protect the child the way a mother should then giving her to someone else is better than some other alternatives we've seen on this site u know?

I totally agree. Totally. I just was thinking that she got her baby back, that's what bothered me. I hope they figure it out that she's obviously not very well equipped to be a stand alone mother.
