Russell Brothers, 73, a former Belle Meade businessman, was arrested after police said he took a 1975 Beechcraft P-58 Barron aircraft.

When the owner of the aircraft, Kenneth Baldwin Jr., noticed his plane was missing, he called police. Baldwin told authorities that he and Brothers share some real estate ventures.

After a couple attempts, Baldwin got in touch with Brothers, who told him if he wanted his plane returned to him, he had to pay him $12,000 that he owed him.

Police said Brothers and Baldwin talked on the phone for hours until they decided to meet at Whitfield's Restaurant in Belle Meade. Once they both arrived, that’s when police arrested Brothers.

Officers said Brothers admitted he flew the plane to an airport in Dickson. He is charged with theft of property worth more than $60,000.

Brothers was convicted in 1993 of money laundering and drug smuggling but released from prison in 1999.

He posted bond on the plane theft charges and was released from jail. Brothers is the cousin of Nashville judge Thomas Brothers.
