PORTAGEVILLE, Mo. -- Police in the Bootheel said twin 2-year-old girls have been found dead inside a hot car in Portageville.
Police chief Ronnie Adams said all the windows in the car were rolled up when someone discovered the dead toddlers late Wednesday afternoon. Police said the deaths appeared to be heat-related.

The car was parked at an apartment complex in Portageville.

Adams said it wasn't known how the little girls got inside the car. Their parents and grandparents were talking to investigators at the police station Wednesday evening.

Investigators are trying to determine if the 2-year-old girls climbed into their grandmother's car outside of her apartment or if someone put them in the car and left them.

Either way, the entire neighborhood is feeling a loss few can put into words.
"Those are some precious little girls," said neighbor Margaret Brown. "It just hit the whole neighborhood. Never seen anything like this. Everyone came out to support the family."
Allannah and Alliya Larry turned 2 years old last month. According to Deasha Simmons, the girls were found around 4 p.m. Wednesday by their mother.
"I already knew they weren't going to make it," said Simmons, who watched as the mother screamed, pulling the toddlers out of the car. "I can't imagine how much pain their mama's going through."

Sheriff Terry Stevens said crews did everything they could to save the twins.
"Emergency personnel responded and tried to resuscitate the children to no avail," Stevens said. "The sheriff's office and the highway patrol were called in and a criminal investigation was launched like we always do in any unnatural death."

Right now, police have no idea how long the girls were in the car. The sheriff says he hopes an autopsy will provide answers.
"We don't know if they were placed in the car or if they climbed in under their own will. That's why we're investigating," Stevens added.
With the extreme heat, it's hard for anyone to imagine what the children endured.

"We know the temperature inside that vehicle reached over 130 degrees," Stevens said.

"Every time I think of it it's so upsetting because I have grandchildren of my own," Brown said. "Just to find out something like that would be beyond tragic."

Stevens says investigators are interviewing several people and officers are canvassing the entire Lakeview Apartment area. They're asking if anyone saw what happened. They do not have anyone in custody at this time.

Oh this is just tragic. Lock your car doors people, and make sure the keys are placed in a safe location. Kids know how to unlock cars, and doors, especially if you leave the keys where they can reach them.

When my 17 year old was very small, he got a hold of my mother n law's keys, and unlocked the car, and managed to turn it on. After that incident, we never left keys just laying around.

These kids getting out of the houses shows you need the little hook locks on the top of the door so they cant reach them
I still have them on my screen doors b/c I like the doors open daytime but with so many home invasions in the city now I like the extra lock instead of just the handle lock

I don't care if someone was napping. If they aren't smart enough to lock their own house doors, put up child gates, or other methods to keep 2 year olds in the house that's irresponsible. IF the kids were supposed to be napping or not, 1 adult really needs to be awake at all times in a home with A toddler, let alone TWO.

Twin 2-year-old girls found dead in a sweltering car Wednesday in this southeast Missouri town apparently had a close call two weeks ago, getting locked in the same car but rescued before they overheated, police say.

The girls, Allannah and Alliya Larry, were found dead on the floorboard of their grandmother's locked Chevy Impala at about 4 p.m. Wednesday. Police think the girls sneaked outside -- sometime after 1:30 p.m. -- while their grandmother was napping.

The car was locked, and relatives had to smash the car's window to get them out.

Police Chief Ronnie Adams said an autopsy will be conducted Thursday in Cape Girardeau, but he said investigators already presume that both girls died from the heat. When police took a temperature reading inside the car on Wednesday -- more than an hour after the girls' bodies were pulled out, and after the broken window allowed the interior to cool somewhat -- it was 140 degrees inside the car.

Two weeks ago, Portageville police were called to the house when relatives found the twins locked inside the same car.

"We had to get a locksmith and get them out," Adams said of the earlier incident. The girls hadn't been in the car long that day, and they weren't hurt.

Police aren't sure if another child, a 3-year-old boy, had played a role somehow in the girls gaining access to the car. The door lock was automatic and, once inside the car, the girls could've easily locked themselves in by pushing a button. But opening the door by themselves to climb inside? That's one of the aspects that has police wondering if someone else was involved.

"We don't know if the girls got in the car themselves, or if the 3-year-old let them in," Adams said.

The boy was found unharmed in the house Wednesday. Police have tried talking to the boy about what happened, but he isn't talking. State workers have taken him to live elsewhere while the investigation continues. The Portageville Police Department, New Madrid County Sheriff's Department and Missouri State Highway Patrol are working on the case.

The grandmother, Anna Smith, 41, could face charges of child neglect, Adams said. Police will send their report to the local prosecutor to determine what, if any, charges are filed.

Smith never left her car locked because the lock was damaged, Adams said. Instead, she left it unlocked and used her key only for the ignition.

They had a close scare recently yet did nothing to keep this from happening again. These people did not deserve those precious babies.

I always tell my children, especially my 2 yo who always ask to play in the car. "mi amor (my love), the car is NOT a toy".
Now as we get in the car to leave somewhere he tells me, "mama, car not toy".....ah, only if I could trust that as true understanding.

There ending was not easy. So sorry baby sisters....heavens light always.

There was a warning sign. All adults responsible for those babies that day need to be arrested and charged with gross neglect. Period. No excuses, no defense, put their asses in a fucking oven.
