Julian Carter arrested after 5yr-old found in closet, in trash bag, dead

Authorities have found the body of a missing 5-year-old Compton girl in a trash bag in a closet at her home.

Los Angeles County sheriff's spokesman Deputy Jeff Gordon says the girl's uncle, 25-year-old Julian Carter, has been arrested in connection with the death.

Deputies searched the girl's home Sunday morning after her mother reported her missing.

During a standard check of the house to make sure she wasn't hiding anywhere, the girl's body was found in a closet.

I'm sure more will be released as the investigation continues.

According to family friends, the girl had been beaten and stabbed to death, and they said it could have been prevented.

"This young man, if he would have got the proper help that he needed, this problem wouldn't have happened," said neighbor Bertrell Hall.

Julian Carter, the girl's uncle, has been arrested. Friends and neighbors say Carter has mental problems and has been committed several times. He lived with his niece, sister and parents.

Hmm, something smells a little fishy here. Where was the mother at the time? Did she leave and notice her daughter gone- she left him with the uncle or what?

COMPTON, Calif. (KABC) -- A 25-year-old man is under arrest for murder after the body of his 5-year-old niece was found in a closet at a home in Compton on Sunday.

According to family friends, the girl had been beaten and stabbed to death, and they said it could have been prevented.

"This young man, if he would have got the proper help that he needed, this problem wouldn't have happened," said neighbor Bertrell Hall.

Police responded to a home on the 1100 block of East Peck Street after the 5-year-old's mother called 911 to report her daughter missing. When deputies arrived, they found the girl's body stuffed in a trash bag in a bedroom closet during a routine check of the home.

Julian Carter, the girl's uncle, has been arrested. Friends and neighbors say Carter has mental problems and has been committed several times. He lived with his niece, sister and parents.

"There were warning signs, like he needs treatment, like he needs some type of attention or something, but I don't know how they handle it, I just know that to me, it was a warning signs," said neighbor Talonce Hall.

Carter is being held without bail on one count of murder.

so many of these "mentally unstable" psychos lately... like really, wtf!? There are "signs" of shit about to go down but everyone lets it slide not to disturb the peace and BAM! you find your daughter stuffed in a closet, stabbed to death.

People need to seriously wake up and smell the rotten shit living in their house.

Another one they claim has mental issues that weren't addressed BEFORE an innocent child lost their life. I'm so tired of hearing that excuse. If they really felt he needed help they should have gotten him some help. There's such thing as involuntary commitment, and its there for a reason. Poor baby girl, if only they had cared enough to protect her as much as they do care enough to make excuses for the uncle.

Don't get me wrong, I know people have troubles, even I have depression problems. Difference is, I knew to get help when I needed it and when I didn't realize how bad I was, my family didn't make excuses, they talked to me and showed me I needed help and then, made sure I got it. Funny thing is, no matter how bad I got the thought of hurting a child or anyone else for that matter NEVER crossed my mind. This mans family, friends and neighbors failed that little girl. They all wanna help build his defense now, but if they really thought he needed help they could have gotten it for him, they could have saved this little girl. But they didn't.

I feel like the family is to blame here too. They new he was mentally ill. How is it that they leave their 5 year old alone with this guy so this can happen. There is no way this guy should have been allowed around the children.

This is so infuriating. He was committed many times before, and they still felt he would be okay in the home with a small child like this? I bet the entire family needs meds

i'm sorry, but as a mental health professional, my opinion is that the only "help" that would've prevented him from killing someone... eventually... is institutionalization. he was in a revolving door of psychiatric commitments because hospitals HAVE to discharge everyone sooner or later. perhaps to a "supervised" living situation, but those fall apart sometimes...

there are people that just need to be locked up in a hospital, for good, given decent living conditions and care, but never released... BEFORE someone gets hurt or killed. the pendulum swung too far in favor of deinstitutionalizing chronically mentally ill patients. it can't swing back because no one has the money to rebuild those inpatient care units.

    OMG poor sweet child....horrific ending.

The child should have never been left alone with this unstable person. Ever. It was her mother's duty to see to that.

    Rest in peace little one.

The little girl's name is Mireya Nila McCall.
    [...]
Neighbors say Carter's behavior had become increasingly bizarre and menacing.

Last August, he slapped a 3-year-old neighbor girl, hard, in the face. Sheriff's deputies took Carter away, said Wendy Walker, 29, that girl's mother. His behavior just got stranger and stranger, she said. Walker said that in January, she caught him snarling profanities at her daughter through her window.

Carter used to have a job; he dressed well and loved to dance, Walker said. He used to go to her house to play dominoes and other games, Walker said. He used to play kickball with her daughter, who was close to Mireya. Carter sang gospel songs too, she added.

"He was raised in the church," Walker said. "We used to hang out during the holidays.... That dude was a dancer. He loved to dance."

But in recent years, Carter's odd behavior grew worse, and neighbors saidhe would sometimes dance in the middle of the street from before dawn into the late afternoon. Sometimes he danced during downpours.

Neighbors said they thought he was into heavy drugs. Brandon Ellison, 27, said Carter cut a "zombie-like" figure in the neighborhood.

Jones said he developed a hard stare.

"He looked at you like he wanted to kill you," she said. "Like he hated you."

Not long ago, she said, Carter tried to break into her house. Jones said he knew she was there, and she grabbed a knife. Before she could get help, one of his brothers stopped him and dragged him away, Jones said.

"It was in broad daylight," she said. "It's like he got a hold of some really bad stuff, and he was tripping."

Carter lived with his sister, niece and parents in a small house in the 1100 block of East Peck Street; family members had been apologetic about his behavior, but they seemed powerless to stop it, neighbors said.

Residents said the tree-shaded neighborhood was not without its problems, including gangs. It's calm during the daytime, rougher at night. But for the most part, neighbors get along, and even some of the well-established gang members seem respectful of many of their neighbors. The neighborhood had an Easter celebration, Jones said.

In many ways, the girl's killing was more shocking than any gang murder could be.

Lt. Liam Gallagher, of the L.A. County Sheriff's Department homicide bureau, said Mireya's mother called about 7:20 a.m. Sunday to report Mireya missing. Deputies found her in the closet. Though investigators said her body was in a trash bag, family members said they were told it was not. Carter was not home. According to a coroner's report, Mireya was killed by "sharp-force trauma to the neck."

    Update

Barbara Jones said she had a warning ready for her grandchildren whenever they visited her Compton home. Keep an eye out for her neighbor, Julian Carter.

"I'd tell them, 'If you see Julian walk up, come inside. I'm too old to be fighting with him,' " the 61-year-old Jones said Monday. "I'll fight with him, but I don't think I can win."

Carter, 25, on Monday was accused of killing his 5-year-old niece, placing her body in a plastic trash bag and stuffing it into the closet of the family's home, which is next door to Jones' home.

There were a lot of warning signs with this guy. Unfortunately it takes him killing his niece before anything is done. Very sad!
