    That G Shit

Jonathan Metz had been trapped for two days in his basement with his left arm stuck in a broken furnace. Smelling rotting flesh, he decided that amputation was his only hope.

So the 31-year-old fashioned a tourniquet near his shoulder and began cutting. He made it almost all the way through, but wasn't able to free himself.

He was rescued Wednesday after three days in his West Hartford basement when worried friends called police, and firefighters cut the furnace apart.

Doctors gave the account of Metz's harrowing experience at a news conference Thursday. They said the attempted self-amputation probably saved his life, preventing the infection in his gangrenous arm from spreading to the rest of his body.

"There was a little bit of fat that remained and he was in and out of consciousness," said Dr. Scott Ellner, Metz' surgeon at Hartford's Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center. "It sounds like maybe there was a nerve there that prevented him from completing the amputation."

Metz, who lives alone, had been working to replace the boiler fins on his furnace Sunday when his arm became trapped, officials said.

A friend, Luca DiGregorio, told reporters Wednesday that he and other friends grew worried when Metz did not show up for work and missed a Tuesday night softball game.

Metz also did not answer the doorbell when DiGregorio stopped at his home Wednesday, where he said he saw Metz's beagle, Porsche, "yipping at the back door." DiGregorio called police, who found Metz in the basement.

"I was a little worried, especially when the first cop showed up," DiGregorio said. "Then more showed up, and then the ambulance showed up, so it got a little nerve-racking."

Firefighters ripped apart the furnace with heavy tools, including a spreader normally used to take the door off a car, West Hartford Fire Chief Matt Stuart said.

Once they did so, the arm "just gave away, because his arm was already infected and the tissue was nonviable," Ellner said.

Officials didn't know what type of tools Metz used to attempt the amputation. He was mumbling during the rescue operation, officials noted.

Ellner said Metz drank some of the water that had leaked from the furnace to help him stay alive.

Dr. David Shapiro, a trauma specialist who also worked on Metz, said he could not have lived much longer.

"I've never experienced somebody who had the ability to go through something like this," Ellner said. "He provides a lot of inspiration for myself, not just as a physician but as a human being."

Shapiro said Metz was not out of the woods. Infection remained a concern, but Metz was expected to survive. He will have to undergo more surgery to prepare the arm for a prosthetic, Ellner said. That will involve removing more tissue that may not be healthy, and then grafting skin and muscle onto the remaining bone, he said.

"We basically told him that he's going to go back to doing the things he did before, his athletics, his woodworking, his job," he said.

Metz's family lives in North Carolina and were en route to the hospital on Thursday, the doctors said.

Neighbors describe Metz as a quiet, friendly man who helps them shovel out from storms. They said they were caring for his dog until he comes home and were visiting him in the hospital.

His case evoked memories of Colorado climber Aron Ralston, who cut off his arm with a dull blade after getting trapped under a boulder in a remote Utah canyon in 2003.

He twisted his arm against a rock to break the bones, cut through his flesh, then wrapped the stump in a makeshift sling. Then, he rappelled down a 60-foot drop and hiked six miles through the desert for help.

Later that year, an Australian miner amputated his arm below the elbow with a short-bladed craft knife when he was pinned under an overturned tractor carrying more than three tons of limestone dust.

I guess it's kind of hard to know what I would do until in a situation like that (which I never want to be in btw). I am amazed that he didn't pass out from the pain.

His father says a Connecticut man who tried to amputate his own arm after he became trapped for days while working on his basement furnace has undergone followup surgery.

Jonathan Metz got his arm caught Sunday in his furnace boiler. He was rescued Wednesday, a day after he used his own tools and cut through most of his left arm.

Paul Metz of Southport, N.C., also said Friday his 31-year-old son has been in good spirits and looking forward to being fitted with a prosthetic arm.

Dr. Scott Ellner had said the operation at Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center involved removing more tissue that may not be healthy, and then grafting skin and muscle onto the remaining bone.

Doctors hope Metz, of West Hartford, can be released from the hospital sometime next week.

"good spirits...?" either he's one of those annoying optimists, or he's still on the IV morphine.

West Hartford, Conn. (WTNH) - Two pieces of good news for the West Hartford man who got his arm stuck in that furnace and who tried to cut it off himself. His parents say he is recovering very well in the hospital.

He's also being given a new furnace.

Anne and Paul Metz got to see their son Jonathan alive and well and out of intensive care. "He's in some discomfort because of the shoulder surgery the other day, but his spirits are high and he's got a good sense of humor," Anne Metz said.

That is amazing considering the ordeal Jonathan went through in the basement of his West Hartford house. A week ago he was working on a furnace when his arm got stuck inside. There was only one way out -- a hacksaw blade that was was within his reach.

"He's an amazing person, but even at that," Paul Metz said. "I couldn't imagine anyone using a saw blade to amputate their own arm. It's way beyond anything I could image."

"He thought if he could sever it and get it in the freezer that they would be able to re-attach it and that would be the best-case scenario," Anne Metz said.

When worried co-workers finally called 911, emergency crews found he cut almost all the way through his arm, but it was infected and couldn't be saved. His parents say Jonathan is optimistic a prosthetic arm will completely replace the one he lost

His furnace is not going to recover, however. Firefighters had to destroy it to get Metz out. But an East Hartford company, Automatic TLC Energy , is giving Metz a new furnace for free.

"I mean, just the fact that he's working on his boiler. It just didn't seem right to charge for something like that," Michael Allen of Automatic TLC Energy said.

Certainly the free top of the line furnace is a great gift, but the greatest gift of all for Jonathan and his family is that he is recovering well. He's got his eyes set on two goals for later this year. In August, he's going to be best man at his brother's wedding, and then in November, Jonathan has his own wedding to look forward to.

I'm glad he's going to be okay. That's some smart thinking

I know its not much... but at least it was his left arm (Assuming he was right handed). I think recovery may have been a little more difficult if he lost the dominant arm....

But super fuckin brave IMO..... I'd need a shitload of "encouragement" to accomplish that...

After being trapped for 12 hours, it took Jonathan Metz , a Connecticut man whose arm became stuck inside the furnace he was repairing, an additional six hours to "psych" himself up enough to amputate his own arm using a the blade of a power saw.

Describing his ordeal publicly for the first time since paramedics found him in the basement of his suburban Connecticut home on June 10, Metz called the experience "surreal."

Speaking to reporters at St. Francis Hospital, where he underwent surgery Friday to receive a muscle graft on his left shoulder to be fitted for a prosthesis, Metz said he felt "blessed and more than fortunate to be here today."

Metz's arm had become caught between heating cores inside the boiler on Monday. Within hours, Metz, 31, could smell the flesh of his crushed arm beginning to rot, the telltale sign of life-threatening infection.

"Very quickly it became apparent to me I had a major problem," he said.

Eighteen hours into the ordeal, he fashioned a makeshift tourniquet and, using the blade from a power saw, began by hand to sever his left arm.

"As luck would have it I had the blades I would use with some of my power tools," he said.

He floated in and out consciousness, drinking water leaked from the furnace. He said he used a bloody flip-flop to scoop up the water.

Doctors said the decision he made saved his life.

Metz began cutting into his bicep, about halfway between his elbow and shoulder.

"The cut was going well about halfway through," but then an alarming amount of blood started gushing, the tourniquet became ineffective and he had to stop cutting.

When paramedics found him, they pried the furnace open, using a spreader typically used to remove injured people from car wrecks, and completed the amputation.

"People wonder how someone could go to that extent and remove his own extremity. But he saved his life by removing the non-viable part of the extremity. The wound released toxins that were circulating through the body. Cutting away that dead tissue saved his life," said Dr. Scott Ellner, the surgeon who operated on him Friday.

Metz, who said he is engaged and has a wedding date set, said thinking about his fiancee and family helped get him through the ordeal.

"What got me through this whole thing was thinking about family, friends my dog. I had a lot of living to do," he said.

Metz, who lived alone, was rescued Wednesday after a friend, Luca DiGregorio, grew worried when he did not show up for work and missed a Tuesday night softball game.

Metz did not answer the doorbell when DiGregorio stopped at his home Wednesday, but he said he saw Metz's beagle "yipping at the back door." DiGregorio called police, who found Metz in the basement.

"I was a little worried, especially when the first cop showed up," DiGregorio told reporters. "Then more showed up, and then the ambulance showed up, so it got a little nerve-racking."

Paramedics had to cut open the furnace and fully sever Metz's arm to free him from the furnace.

"We used the spreader normally used to tear a car apart. It was a pretty old boiler and this particular unit was very strong. We had to cut a support rod inside the boiler and spread apart the two halves, breaking the cast iron in order to extricate the arm from the unit," said Battalion Chief Matthew Stuart of the West Hartford Fire Department.

Doctors said Metz was recovering well.

For anyone wishing to help Jonathan pay for a prosthetic arm and therapy, his family and friends have established an email and bank account to accept donations.
