A Kansas City woman has been found guilty of second-degree murder in the death last year of her 3-week-old daughter.
A Jackson County jury on Thursday also found Sandra V. Stanton, 30, guilty of endangering the welfare of a child and child abuse.
Stanton, who had prior drug and illegal weapons convictions and was on probation at the time, testified that she had been drinking and went to sleep on May 27.
When she woke up, she said, her 3-year-old was holding her infant daughter, Destiny Farnch, who was blue and gasping for breath.
The baby was taken to Children’s Mercy Hospital, where doctors determined she had suffered a severe head injury. She was declared dead about a week later.
Medical experts testified that it would be virtually impossible for a small child to have inflicted the kind of injuries suffered by Destiny. Stanton testified that she had been the only adult in the house that day.
According to the Missouri Department of Corrections, Stanton was released from custody March 30, after being sentenced to a 120-day substance abuse treatment program.
Sentencing for Stanton is scheduled for May 27
