Sheboygan woman charged with abusing daughter, 4
A 30-year-old Sheboygan woman charged today with felony child abuse told police she blacked out and doesn’t know how long she spanked her 4-year-old daughter after the child woke up scared from a nightmare and wouldn’t go back to bed.
The child wound up with bruises across her buttocks and back that remained visible a week later when police were summoned to the house by a family friend, according to a criminal complaint.
The mother, Heidi M. Perry, of 1021 N. Eighth St., Apt. 11, could face up to 18 months in prison, if convicted.
According to the complaint:
A 26-year-old woman called police Wednesday night to report the child was being abused, and officers were sent to a home where the mother and child were in the 1300 block of North Ninth Street. As Perry was talking to one officer, the girl came running into the room wearing a diaper, and the officer could see bruising on her leg below the diaper.
Perry told police the child woke up a week prior about 3 a.m. and was scared from a nightmare. The child refused to go back to bed, and Perry said her boyfriend then spanked the child.
The girl was spanked again when she still refused to go to bed, after which she threw a temper tantrum. Perry said she snapped after the tantrum and began spanking the child. She said she blacked out during the incident and didn’t know how long or how hard she hit the girl.
The boyfriend, who has not been charged, said he intervened to stop the spanking.
