LONG BRANCH, NEW JERSEY — Police arrested a 20-year-old volunteer youth adviser who they say sexually assaulted a teen boy.
After investigating allegations of sexual assault, police on Thursday arrested Craig Reeves of Long Branch for allegedly engaging in sexual acts with a 14-year-old boy he met while volunteering as a youth adviser, according to police and court documents.
Reeves also pretended to be a young woman on the social networking site MySpace, using photos of nude young women to solicit photos of young men who were under the impression they were responding to a woman, police said.
Reeves' MySpace page says that as of the fall of 2008, he was attending Brookdale Community College, had recently resigned as a lieutenant for the Long Branch Police Explorer Post 167, was part of the Elberon First Aid Squad, volunteered at a local hospital in various departments and was a security intern there.
Long Branch Detective Sgt. Fernando Sanders declined to say where Reeves was volunteering when he met the victim.
Lori Burke-Cook, public relations coordinator for Elberon First Aid, said Reeves was associated with the squad for about 6 months, from late 2007 through early 2008.
""In 2008, there was an issue involving Mr. Reeves that led to his immediate suspension due to conduct unbecoming. He was been suspended ever since,'' she said. ""He was never a certified EMT and was never allowed to go on any first aid calls unsupervised."
Reeves was charged with exhibiting photos of a child in a sexual act, lewdness, promoting obscene material, aggravated sexual assault and selling and receiving film/photos of simulated sexual acts.
He was taken to the Monmouth County Jail, Freehold Township with bail set at $159,000 without the option to post 10 percent.
