Richard Guillen Accused Molester Drove Santa Rosa School Buses For Four Years

A Petaluma man in custody for allegedly molesting a 13-year-old boy drove school buses for four years in Santa Rosa, according to the national company that contracts with local school districts.
Richard “Butch” Guillen, 60, was arraigned Monday in Sacramento Superior Court on charges of lewd acts on a child younger than 14 years old. He’s being held on $500,000 bail.
Guillen drove a regular daily route for Santa Rosa schools since April 2006 as an employee of Laidlaw, a national bus company bought by First Student Inc. in 2007, said company spokeswoman Maureen Richmond.

richmond wouldn’t provide details about Guillen’s routes. Guillen passed two criminal background checks for the company and had a clean driving record, Richmond said.

Sacramento authorities began investigating Guillen after a Santa Rosa boy told his mother that Guillen gave him alcohol and sexually molested him in a Sacramento motel. Guillen had taken the boy on an overnight trip to attend an auto show, Sacramento Sheriff’s Sgt. Tim Curran said.
The boy’s family knew Guillen and had given him permission to travel with the child, Curran said.

Deputies set out with an arrest warrant last week and located Guillen in the Bodega Bay Marine Laboratory parking lot where he was waiting to take children on a bus back to school from a school field trip to the lab.

Detectives don’t believe the boy knew Guillen through his bus routes, Curran said.

Sacramento County sheriff's detectives have broadened their investigation into an alleged child molester they fear might have abused victims as far away as Mexico, according to authorities.

Detectives have learned that Richard "Butch" Guillen, a 60-year-old Petaluma resident arrested in May, lived and worked in the Southern California communities of Imperial Beach and Huntington Beach roughly between 1980 and 1995, said sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Tim Curran.

Guillen coached a number of youth sports teams, from baseball to basketball to surfing, during that time, and detectives fear he might have molested children in those areas as well, Curran said.

Guillen – who was working as a school bus driver in Santa Rosa when he met the 13-year-old boy who he allegedly abused – also spent time in popular surfing areas in Rosarita, Mexico, in the 1980s, Curran said.

Child abuse Detective Darin Pometta said Guillen befriended the alleged victim in Santa Rosa during trips to and from school on Guillen's bus.

Guillen eventually introduced himself to the boy's single mother and suggested that he could be a mentor to the boy, Pometta said. The boy's mother later allowed Guillen to take the boy on a day trip to San Francisco for a motorcycle event, the detective said.

Shortly thereafter, the boy's mother allowed him to accompany Guillen on a three-day trip to Sacramento for an auto show, Pometta said.

It was during that trip that Guillen allegedly took the boy to a motel, gave him alcohol and molested him, Pometta said.

"We strongly believe this story has happened over decades in various different places," he said. "It's all part of the M.O. of the case."

Detectives serving a search warrant at Guillen's home after his arrest found hundreds of photos from Santa Rosa youth-related sporting events, authorities said.
