An Aiken woman has been charged in a murder-for-hire plot after meeting with an investigator posing as a killer for hire.

Margaret D. Stephens, 41, of Heathwood Drive in Aiken, is charged with solicitation to commit a felony - murder, which carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison. She was arrested Thursday afternoon after meeting with the undercover officer in a parking lot in Aiken, the Aiken County Sheriff's Office said.

"Mrs. Stephens told our investigator she wanted the death to look like an accident and agreed to a price," Sheriff Michael Hunt said. "We gave her a chance to change her mind, but she chose not to do it."

The victim is not identified.

She was distraught about her family situation and was attempting to regain control of the family finances by having her husband killed. Guess she won't be getting that money now.
