The incident was originally ruled an accidental death, but investigators re opened the case after the family abandoned another infant in Connecticut in 2006, according to court records.
Robert Manning Stiles, 36, told Norfolk police that he smothered his infant son, Dante, with a towel, according to a stipulation of facts filed with the court. Stiles was ordered to serve 12 years and nine months of his sentence.

Stiles was caring for the family's two children while his wife, Erin Robarge, was at her Navy job.
A medical examiner initially ruled that Dante died of sudden infant death syndrome.
The case was reopened in 2006, after Robarge concealed a pregnancy from her husband and abandoned her newborn baby in a vehicle in Groton, Conn., according to court records.
Naval Criminal Investigative Service agents interviewed Robarge and Stiles. Under further questioning by a Norfolk detective, Stiles admitted that he smothered Dante.
