11-year-old lured, sexually assaulted, abandoned; Picked up and assaulted again

    I couldn't find a pic of asshat #2
An 11-year-old St. Tammany Parish girl who was taken to Mississippi last week by a man she met on the Internet was raped by her abductor and abandoned at a Bay St. Louis gas station, only to be picked up and sexually assaulted again by a second man, authorities said Thursday.

Christopher M. Spiehler, 29, of Slidell, who met the girl on a social networking site called VampireFreaks.com, and Sean Robertson, 21, of Waveland, Miss., have been booked with statutory rape, Mississippi authorities said.

Spiehler apparently had been communicating with the girl for months through the website, which is dedicated to vampire enthusiasts and those interested in the occult, authorities have said. The girl made contact with Spiehler on the night of April 23 and said she wanted to run away from home, St. Tammany and Hancock County investigators said.

Just before midnight, when he turned 29, Spiehler picked the girl up from her eastern St. Tammany home and took her into Mississippi without her parents' consent, authorities said. He sexually assaulted the girl before leaving her at a gas station in Bay St. Louis, authorities said.

After being abandoned at the gas station, the girl was allegedly picked up by Robertson, taken to his home and raped, authorities said. Robertson was later arrested by the Hancock County Sheriff's Office.

Shortly after she left home last week, the girl's father contacted authorities, who began an investigation that led them to Spiehler, who was located at his job at an auto parts store in Slidell on Saturday around 10 a.m., investigators said.

About an hour later, the girl called her father from a cell phone and told him to pick her up at a Wal-Mart in Gulfport, Miss. Police located the girl and reunited her with her family a short time later.
    [...]

Following their investigation, the Hancock Sheriff's Office booked Spiehler and Robertson with statutory rape. No bond has been set for Robertson at this time, and Hancock officials declined to comment on whether the two men knew each other.

Both departments are continuing to investigate the incident, and more charges and arrests are possible, officials said.

Eleven? Seriously, dudes... and parents. If Spiehler was that easy to find once the girl was missing, how hard would have it been to monitor her in the months leading up to this? Even if she was a willing participant, she's ELEVEN.

Yes. My daughter is 11, and will be 12 in August. This story makes me sick. Every day I am grateful for what a great kid I have, and how trustworthy she is. However, there's no way I wouldn't monitor her internet usage any less than I currently do, which is access to everything--email, facebook, IM records, etc. I reward her loyalty and trustworthy history as much as I can, but the fact is that I am her parent and I'm not here to just give her gold stars--I'm here to support her with protection, that's what parents are for.

I don't know of these parents are overly permissive, neglectful, or just extremely naive and unaware, but any of these are dangerous. Girls at 11 will flip from one moment of surprising and beautiful maturity right into a terrifying tantrum and immature decision skills that can almost reflect that of a toddler. I wish that more parents understood how parenting requires vigilance and strength in standing their grounds rather than giving in and trying to be a buddy or peer to their children.

Just to be fair--after knowing some of my daughter's friends (and luckily she is in a different school), I also comprehend the fact that an 11-year-old can sneak out if they decide to do so, and short of locking her in the room or restraining her in some way, sometimes there is just nothing you can do to stop your kid from sneaking out. Perhaps that's why she was found so quickly too--her parents DID figure out she was missing somewhat soon. even though as I said, I monitor my daughter closely I hate to say that she could probably sneak out when I am sleeping if she were inclined.

I shall stop that thought right at this moment since it could cause me to never sleep again. Just wanted to be fair to the parents if that is the case, and it's a sobering thought for anyone. No matter the tantrum frequency or new behavior of adolescence, this age is just heartbreaking for the strange contradiction of child/tween.

my daughter is almost 14...and though she has her problems never once has she been allowed to run 'free' and not once has she ever been assualted

i truly feel bad for this girl...if her parents dont give a damn and let her run wild to be able to get into these predicaments then her future is very bleak...i dont see how this couldve happened 2X to this child!

It's not the sneaking put that I have an issue with the parents. It's an 11-year-old communicating via the internet for months with an adult. In this day and age, it is very easy to monitor your kids activity on the internet - even if you are not that computer savvy.

My kids were online in the mid-90's, the "wild wild west" days of the internet, long before the invention of filters, free security software, and most of the current monitoring features available. The computer was in a public area of the house, their time online was limited, and having any account that we didn't have the password to meant loss of use. We checked up on their activity frequently and enforced the rules. Yes, we had some minor things happen, but kids are notorious for bad decisions and they learned from those mistakes. If we had not been there and things went too far, the "mistakes" could have been huge and costly.

Our kids we trusted far more than everyone else on the internet. I would no more open the door for months and let an adult stranger come into my house to play with my kids than I would let them do it via the internet.

You know, I am thankful we didn't have the internet while I was a child. My mother would have had even more ways to find her shithead botfriends, and I would have been so desparate to find someone to save me that I would have ended up in the back of someones perv waggon. Even without the internet I did a pretty good job of getting myself in trouble. I was the 11 year old that snuck out to hang out and smoke with her much older boyfriend that thought I was 16 (and looking back, he was an idiot. All of the hims.) Thankfully, I had a Grandmother that took custody of me and got me fairly straightened out.

I agree DV--I just meant that perhaps they tried to do what they could, and even knew that she was talking to him, but she got past them in some way. But you're right in that if they knew absolutely nothing, they're being naive. I do let my daughter go as far as I can in terms of trust, as it sounds like you do, but there's a huge difference in allowing that and being completely clueless about who/what is in your kids' lives.

The internet for some reason has become an issue sort of like diaries, where parents sometimes feel that checking their emails or monitoring is an invasion of privacy. However, the net is a social network, and it's just as reasonable to keep up to date about what kids do online as it is to know the names of their friends before you allow them to go to their homes, or to personally know their friends before you allow sleepovers.

I check all of my kid's social networking sites. You just never know how close danger is to your kids, unless you look. I have found things that I wasn't too happy with, and then some silly kid stuff. So it doesn't hurt to look

Man pleads guilty to second rape of kidnapped teenager

After she was kidnapped from her home in Slidell, driven across the state line into Mississippi, raped on the side of the road then left behind at a gas station, a stranded 11-year-old girl was approached by yet another man.

Sean Robertson, 21, of Waveland, told the child he would help her, said Hancock County Assistant District Attorney Crosby Parker. Robertson had a phone at his apartment, he said.

Robertson pleaded guilty Tuesday in Hancock County to statutory rape, just a week after the girl’s first attacker, Christopher Spiehler, 30, of Slidell, was convicted by a St. Tammany Parish jury of aggravated rape, simple kidnapping and 50 counts of child pornography.

Robertson pleaded guilty Monday to statutory rape, accepting a 25-year sentence. The judge then suspended 10 years. Parker said the girl and her family approved of the plea deal to save her from testifying at a second rape trial.

Spiehler’s conviction for aggravated rape carries a mandatory life sentence, which Judge Peter Garcia will impose Oct. 13.

He also has an outstanding charge of statutory rape in Hancock County, where he allegedly raped the girl on the side of the road. Parker said that, after Spiehler is formally sentenced to life in prison, he will meet with the girl and her family again to decide whether to move forward with that charge.

Parker said the evidence in the case showed that on April 24, 2011, Robertson encountered the female victim at the Chevron gas station on Highway 603.

The girl had apparently been stranded at the station after she had left her Louisiana home with another man, Parker said.
Robertson gave the girl a ride to his home in Waveland, where the two had sex later in the evening, Parker said.

"Mr. Robertson claimed to police that the victim said she was 18," Parker said.

    "That is no excuse."

After spending the night with Robertson, the girl was able to get a ride to the Wal-Mart in Gulfport where the girl's father picked her up and called police.

He's 29? He looks about 15 in that pic! The parents should have been much more aware of the sites their child was visiting and who she was talking to on those sites. I would not allow my 11yr old to go on vampire/occult sites. They are very lucky their child was not killed after she was raped.

There is no way to prevent your kid from sneaking out of the house. Sure you could tie them or duct tape them or something but if they really, really wanted to they will get out. There is no way for you to monitor their internet use when they are at a friends house, school, library. You just have to do the very best you can to teach them by example and communicate what is right and what is wrong.

My kids know that I will snatch their cell phone out of their hand mid-text at any time to check their messeges, pics etc... Same goes for their computer (by the way they only have 1 they can use and it is in the kitchen with me, absolutely no way will I have wi-fi!!) I don't drink, I don't use drugs, I don't beat them, I'm married so there is no strange men around here ever. I talk with them every day about the goings on at school (frankly, they tell me more than I need to know) They do NOT have facebooks or email. But guess what - I wouldn't put anything past them, after all I was a teenaged girl myself once. Where there's a will there's a way.
