The man accused of killing his daughter’s fiancé with an ax argued for bond at his video arraignment Tuesday.

“I was hoping for a bond,” said 59-year-old Jimmie Williams as he was charged with first degree murder.

“No sir,” answered Judge Cathie Dowd. “Not with a murder. No bond.”

Police say Williams attacked 30-year-old ` around 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning at Williams’ home on Chevrolet Avenue in Flint.

Prosecutor David Leyton says it is a senseless killing. He says it appears Barfield didn’t really do anything to provoke the murder, but that Williams felt the man did not respect him.

"I think something had been building up due to this alleged perceived disrespect,” said Leyton. “The suspect then took an ax to the victim and killed him."

Barfield was working on a car in Williams’ driveway on Saturday in the 1300 block of Chevrolet Avenue and lying on his back on the cement, police said. Williams came up to Barfield and struck him with a metal rod through the forehead, police said.

A bloody axe was also found at the scene and Barfield’s head had been partially severed at the neck, according to the news release.

Neighbors discovered the scene and called 911.

Flint Sgt. J. Leigh Golden said Barfield had been dating the daughter of the suspect,
Jimmie Gene Williams, for 10 years and the couple has children together. The incident occurred at Williams' home.

Police believe Williams snuck up on Barfield and allegedly killed him with a metal pole and ax in the driveway, said Golden.

“The victim in no way was doing anything wrong,” she said. “He was just over there visiting his girlfriend’s father.”
