Troopers: Man Killed Wife Before Chase
Troopers said 45-year-old Arthur Mims led them on a high-speed chase through several counties Tuesday morning.
Police said the chase started after Mims shot his estranged wife, 36-year-old Dawn Katrice Mims, and his 16-year-old stepdaughter at a home in Duncan, S.C., at about 3:15 a.m.
His wife died and his stepdaughter was taken to the hospital, troopers said. Her condition is not immediately known.
When the girl ran for help, Mims set the home on fire and sped off in his pickup, troopers said.
According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, Mims was on Interstate 85 in Cherokee County, near Gaffney, when the chase started.
Troopers chased Mims over the state line into Mecklenburg County. At about 4 a.m., Eyewitness News cameras captured the chase near Graham Street in Charlotte. The pursuit continued up to Davidson County.
Troopers said Mims was armed during the chase.
Troopers used stop sticks to finally end the chase, which spanned more than 100 miles and reached speeds of up to 120 mph. Three of the tires on the truck Mims was driving were blown.
A 3 1/2-hour standoff followed, during which troopers closed I-85 north of Lexington in Davidson County.
Troopers said Mims was throwing up blood during the standoff because he drank bleach. They said they don't know when he drank it.

According to the Spartanburg Sheriff's Office, Mims will face charges of murder, assault and battery with a deadly weapon and arson. Mims will also face charges in North Carolina, including eluding authorities and reckless driving.

3:18 a.m.
Investigators were called to 823 Terrace Creek Drive in Duncan, S.C. Police say Mims shot and killed his estranged wife and also shot a teenage girl at the home. Upon arrival, police found the house had been set on fire.


• 3:30 a.m.
Deputies say they were told Mims left the home in a white Ford F-150 pickup truck. A police chase started on Interstate 85 in Cherokee County, near Gaffney, shortly after.


• 3:30 a.m.- 5 a.m.
Troopers say Mims led them on a chase into North Carolina, through Mecklenburg County and up to Davidson County. At about 4 a.m., Eyewitness News cameras captured the chase near Graham Street in Charlotte. The pursuit spanned more than 100 miles and reached speeds of up to 120 mph.


• 5 a.m.
Troopers used stop sticks to end the chase on Interstate 85, north of Lexington in Davidson County between mile markers 89 and 91. They said Mims refused to get out the truck, spurring a 3 1/2-hour standoff during which I-85 was shut down.


• 8:30 a.m.
Mims surrendered to police.

A man, who authorities said killed his wife, shot his step-daughter, set their house on fire and drank a gallon of bleach during a standoff with police, was sentenced Tuesday.

Arthur Duval Mims, 46, was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole for murder. He was also sentenced to 20 years in prison, to be served concurrently, for assault and battery with intent to kill. He pleaded guilty a few months ago.

Mims’ attorney -- who said his client thought his wife was cheating on him -- said he believed his client deserved 30 years in prison, mercy for his guilty plea. The judge believed otherwise, giving Mims life in prison.
