Parents charged after baby chokes on bag of marijuana in ambulance

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) -- Waterloo police say they arrested two 18-year-olds after the couples' 7-month-old daughter began choking on a bag of marijuana.

Police arrested Amanda Monique Mallit and Horace Phillip on Thursday evening on charges of child endangerment. Mallit was also arrested for interference with official acts, and Phillip was charged with possession of marijuana.

Paramedics say they were called to the home because Mallit, who is pregnant, was assaulted by another person. While Mallit and her daughter were riding to the hospital in an ambulance, the girl began to choke. Medics say that when they helped the baby, they found a bag of marijuana in her mouth.

HOLY TOLEDO! 18 with a 7-month-old baby and another on the way? Did her doctor not discuss the importance of birth control and leaving enough space between children for her body to recover from her previous pregnancy? Sheesh.

Incredible. SO she's on her way in the ambulance with baby and baby begins to choke and low and behold, a bag of pot! what are the chances? crazy shit. Glad baby was there when she began shocking as we'd probably be reading this story differently.

i was 18 with Jer @9 month old when Tiffy was conceived...eh, was my preference

Yeah, but you waited until your older child was 9 months old before getting pregnant. The baby that was teething on a dimebag was only 7 months old, and the story doesn't mention how far along her mother is, so she could be anything from roughly a month along to five months along, assuming they waited the 6-8 weeks that the OB/GYNs generally recommend before getting back on the hobbyhorse. At least your body had 9 months to build back up its stores of iron and calcium.

yeah my aunt had 2 kids in the same YEAR...yes, year...for 2 months out the year theyre the same age

I have lived in Waterloo for most my life. This story doesn't suprise me. Any of it. I refuse to even drive in some neighborhoods past nightfall.

My son was born a month after my daughter turned one. When he was 1 1/2 his baby sister was born. It wasn't intentionaly and my youngest actually came about while I was on birth control. Not that I'm giving this girl an excuse. My youngest daughter had tons of problems and I truly believe it's because my body didn't have nearly enough time to recover.

A later search of the home turned up more marijuana that was in reach of the baby, according to court records.

After being released from the hospital, Mallit was taken to the police department.

While there, court records state that Mallit became upset and emotional.

Police say Mallit resisted officers and shook the child violently.

Mallit faces two counts of child endangerment and one count of interference with official acts.

Horace Phillip, 18, who also lives in the apartment, faces one count of child endangerment and one count of possession of a controlled substance after he admitted to owning the marijuana.

The closeness of this woman's pregnancies just adds another clue into her irresponsibility. By itself, means little but when viewed within the total picture says a lot.

ok am i missing something here? was it the ambulance drivers weed?...and #2, if it wasnt and the baby got it at the home, NOBODY notices that this 7 month old is chewing on a plastic bag??...

Its' called "Irish twins" when a woman has two babies in the same calendar year. My husband was born the end of January and his brother was born the beginning of December. Then his dad got a vasectomy.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn that the parents shoved the bag down the kids throat with the hopes of not getting caught and having it for later use......
