An 11-year-old Montrose girl now is believed to be
the victim of not one, but two sexual assault suspects, police reported Thursday.
Melton Brown, 51, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust and sexual assault on a child-pattern of abuse.
His arrest follows on the heels of 49-year-old
Richard Colbert’s Wednesday arrest on the same charges” involving the same girl. Colbert had been convicted of a child sexual assault in 1988.
“I cannot imagine a child, especially a young girl, that has been through trauma like that, of (enduring) two alleged assaults,” said Sue Montgomery, director of The Dolphin House Child Advocacy Center in Montrose.

Colbert is accused of inappropriate touching and fondling the child on more than one occasion. Brown also allegedly sexually assaulted the child more than once, police said.

Brown may have known about the abuse that Colbert is alleged to have perpetrated, said Police Cmdr. Gene Lillard. Investigators have not said whether Colbert knew Brown allegedly was abusing the child.
