CA - A 16-year-old girl has been arrested for abusing her 4-month-old stepsister, for whom she was supposed to be caring.
Doctors alerted investigators, saying they were treating an infant with several abuse-type injuries.
Deputies arrived at a home in which several people resided that was extremely filthy.
"[T]he stench was overwhelming. They said it was littered with dirty clothes and animal feces, rotten food all throughout the house," said Deputy Chris Curtice.
Deputies removed a four-year-old girl and one-year-old boy from the home and put them in the care of Child Protective Services. Neither had any serious injuries, but the baby suffered several major injuries.
"The initial examination showed several broken bones, head injuries, pretty extensive injuries," said Deputy Curtice. The infant had been suffering from her injuries for nearly a week before her family decided to take her to the hospital.
Neighbors say they're not surprised at the allegations of abuse and describe the night deputies showed up at the home.
"The son was telling us what happened. The baby's chest got caved in. The arm was broken, and the leg. We asked them how it happened and he said, 'My sister was watching them. You know how my sister watches kids,'" said Sammantha Montes.
"The baby's mom is never there. She's always working, and the sister is always sleeping. She is in better hands now. I don't think they deserve the kids if they do get them back," said Montes.
The 16-year-old girl now faces felony child abuse charges.
