Toddler burned with water dies; police investigate

Before I even get to the post
Can I just ask WTF is it with all the scaldings this week??
Is it me or have there been way more then Ive ever seen before??

A girl burned head-to-toe with scalding water in a North Toledo home Tuesday night has died at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center.

The identity of the girl was not released.

Rescue crews were called to 2819 F St. about 8:35 p.m. to check the safety of a child, said Toledo fire battalion Chief Bob Krause. Crews found the girl, age 3 or 4, in cardio-respiratory arrest.

She was pronounced dead at Mercy St. Vincent.

Police detectives and the Lucas County coroner's investigator were on F Street. It is being investigated as a suspicious death, Steve Kahle, coroner's investigator said.

Additional police crews were called to the address when more than a dozen concerned neighbors gathered outside the address after the girl's mother arrived home, Chief Krause said. Police cleared the way for a Life Squad to leave for the hospital, and no one was injured, he said.

    Ah, geez, not again!

    Another toileting accident, I bet.

Why can't adults get past this idea that it's the end of the world and that the kid needs to be bathed. Maybe it's the volume of work required to fix everything. You don't have to fix everything. You can just strip the bed if it's sopping. The bed won't be dry for a while anyway. If it's not too bad, just throw a towel over it. You don't even have to put the kid in the bath. Ever hear of a sponge bath? Do you bathe a baby every time you change its diaper? No. You could, just spit balling here, keep a few pull-ups around for nighttime accidents. You can just let the kid go back to sleep in on makeshift bed of blankets.

Yeah, it's a drag being woke in the middle of the night to change bedding and clothes. Yeah, even a little anger isn't unheard of. But does it have to be a scalding, beating, death sentence?!! Take a few shortcuts instead, get back to bed sooner, and keep the kid alive and yourself out of prison.

Family calls scalding death of 3-year-old a tragic accident
The death of a toddler who was scalded head-to-toe with hot water is being investigated by Toledo police, but the child’s grandmother said the death was a horrible accident.

Shaniya Sullivan, 3, died late Tuesday at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center. Her death is being investigated as suspicious pending the results of an autopsy, Toledo Police Sgt. Phil Toney said.

Rescue crews were called to 2819 F St. about 8:35 p.m. to check the safety of a child, and found the girl on the floor in cardio-respiratory arrest.

Shaniya was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, and was unable to walk, said her grandmother, Cecelia Streeter. One friend said she "scooted" when she played outside with her siblings.

The child was being bathed by her 11-year-old sister and her friend because Shaniya had "messed herself," according to Ms. Streeter. The mother, Latoya "TT" Sullivan, was out shopping with her for school uniforms for her seven children and an uncle was home, watching television in another room, Ms. Streeter said.

The older children left the room to get a towel, with Shaniya in the bathtub filling with bubbles and lukewarm water. The grandmother said the family believes she turned on the hot water, lost her balance, hit her head, and slipped underwater.

The older children were frightened, and ran out of the house in opposite directions. The child was likely dead by the time family and emergency crews arrived, Mrs. Streeter said.

I could get on my soapbox and preach a thousand ways to Sunday on how this could have been prevented but my heart goes out to the 11 year old sister. That poor child will no doubt carry this guilt for a lifetime. Now the uncle on the other hand...you weren't there to watch television you were supposed to be watching the 7 plus children in the home!

There's just something about the whole turned on the water/slipped and fell/all the siblings ran outside that just doesn't sit with me on this one.

I need more info on this. She may have drowned. They don't indicate the degree of her burns. They don't indicate if the burns played any role in her death. She could have toppled over due to some other medical complication. All kinds of questions. Very few answers.

She should have been better supervised is about all I can say at the moment. I'm just glad it doesn't seem to be an intentional act like we see all to often. I'm glad they are not just taking everyone's word and are looking into it. If it turns out to be more or different, then hang the fuckers.

The child was being bathed by her 11-year-old sister and her friend
At 11, I bathed my baby brother--no way would I have been so frightened that I wouldn't have scooped the baby up out of the water!

Run from the house? Hinky meter beeping here.

How often did the older children bathe their sister? Where was the uncle while this was going on? Did they even ask him for help? Even my 7 year-old-nephew knows what to do if his 4 year-old sister slips and falls in the tub--help her out and call for help.

She looked like a sweet, happy girl.

    Hmmm. Sounds kind of fishy.

Hell, I was ironing clothes one day and unplugged the iron and let it sit on the table not thinking about it. My 2 year old brother at the time (I was 15) grabbed the chord, pulled it down and burned the living hell out of his foot. (he still has a scar) But, I cried and cried for days. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is (and I could be wrong) I wouldn't have run away from the situation and would of tried anything in my power to save my little brother or sister.

If they were afraid of the adults, they may have run. You just know a dead sister is going to get you into a lot of trouble.

Family members devastated by toddler's death
TOLEDO -- Throughout the day family members and friends have been placing teddy bears outside 2819 F Street in North Toledo. That is where 3-year-old Shaniya Sullivan died last night in an apparent bathtub accident. Cecilia Streeter is the toddler's grandmother. "Right now my family is grieving because we all loved her; she was a happy baby," Mrs. Streeter said.

    NORTH TOLEDO
Autopsy awaited on scalded girl, 3
    Grandmother says death an accident

The cause of death of a North Toledo toddler with cerebral palsy who suffered head-to-toe burns remained unclear yesterday as officials await autopsy results, police said.

Shaniya Sullivan, 3, died late Tuesday at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center. Her death is being investigated as suspicious pending the results of an autopsy, expected to be released today, Toledo police Sgt. Phil Toney said.
Initial reports from rescue personnel said the burns were consistent with those caused by scalding water. No one was charged in the death yesterday.
"A lot is going to depend on the coroner's report," Capt. Ray Carroll said.
The girl's grandmother, Cecelia Streeter, said the death was the result of an accident that occurred as Shaniya's 11-year-old sister left the child alone in the bathtub. She said an uncle was in another room watching television.
"Nobody did this to my baby. It was an accident," Ms. Streeter said, sobbing. "They put the blame on my daughter; they're wrong."
Shaniya had been diagnosed with cerebral palsy and was unable to walk, Ms. Streeter said. A neighbor said the girl would "scoot" when she played outside with her siblings.
Shaniya was "always smiling at everyone," her grandmother said.
Rescue crews were called to 2819 F St. about 8:35 p.m. to check the safety of a child and found the girl on the floor in cardiorespiratory arrest.
Ms. Streeter said the children were taught how "to help each other, to take care of each other."

The older children left the room to get a towel, leaving Shaniya in the bathtub that was filling with bubbles and lukewarm water. Shaniya then turned on the hot water, apparently lost her balance, hit her head, and went under the water, Ms. Streeter said.

Nobody heard any screams or cries, she added.
The older children discovered the unresponsive girl and ran screaming out of the house in opposite directions, witnesses said.
A neighbor across the street, Teresa Ratliff, 29, said she went in and found Shaniya in the bathtub. The water was cold by the time she got there, she said. "I saw her floating in a tub full of water. I grabbed her and took her," Ms. Ratliff said.
The scene became chaotic and emotional, and at least two of Shaniya's family members were arrested after being accused of assaulting a police officer who was trying get the girl into an ambulance. Robert M. Johnson, 16, who Ms. Streeter identified as her grandson, and Donald Benton, 35, were taken into custody.
Five of Shaniya's six siblings, ages 1 to 16, were taken into protective custody yesterday by Lucas County Children Services, Executive Director Dean Sparks said. The children will remain with relatives temporarily until a juvenile court judge determines whether they may be returned to their mother's custody, Mr. Sparks said. The mother is free to contact and visit them.
"We have had contact with this family in the past, but not for a couple of years, and certainly not for anything like this," Mr. Sparks said, adding that placement in foster care "is our last resort in any situation."
Shaniya's father, Stephen Sims, sat on the front porch of Ms. Streeter's home on St. John Avenue, his eyes red and wet, with a cigarette hanging from his fingers. He said little, but expressed regret Shaniya's mother wasn't with her when the child was pronounced dead. "I can't believe they didn't let her get in that ambulance. She should have been in that ambulance with her baby," Mr. Sims said.

Latoya 'TT' Sullivan is the mother of Shaniya Sullivan, 3, who died after the girl was scalded while being given a bath Tuesday. Police are waiting for autopsy results before deciding if charges will be filed.

An autopsy revealed Shaniya Sullivan drowned in the bathtub.

The coroner says she was scalded from head to toe by hot water and then drowned.

I suspect the older children were gone much longer than "to get a towel". No wonder they went a running.

Now everyone has to live with the guilt. Kids, parents, uncle.

The water really doesn't need to be that hot to scald. They still haven't said what degree the burns were. That would indicate a lot on the time factor.

If you quickly dip your hand into 120° F water, you won't burn. If you hold it in there, the longer it is in, the worse the burn. At 120° F it takes 5 minutes to get a 3rd degree burn.

Water heaters recommend temps around 140° F to prevent growth of bacteria in the system. It is also the best temp for dishwashers. Energy efficiency by the government says set it at 120° F. 100° F is comfortable for most folks to bathe in but 90° F is recommended for babies.

I doubt the original bath was 120° F but was warm. If she accidentally added more water and warmed it further and was left there for 20 minutes, I can see a decent burn. I really hope she drowned before that.

This child had cerebral palsy, and she was being bathed by two kids? Are you for real?? Just by reading that two kids, one just 11, were bathing a child that is fragile like Shaniya, makes me wonder how well she was cared for.

I have a sister that is severely handicapped with CP and mental disabilities. I often bathed her AND her twin sister at the same time. I am 11 years older than them. They are no more fragile than any other kid. This girl sounds actually LESS handicapped than my sister was at 3.

CP made my sister less limber (more rigid) but giving her a bath didn't involve anything special that I didn't do for my own non-handicapped kids. Number one being DO NOT LEAVE ALONE in the tub.

My twin daughter's middle names are my twin sister's names. (just a silly tidbit that is neither hear nor there LOL)

Twins WOW! I am not sure I could do it. Having 2 only 14 months apart is enough for me!

I for one am a little concerned about the time lapse that would have occurred based on the water being COLD to the touch and the fact that she was just left in the tub. Seems to me like an awful lot of scrambling to get some stories straight before calling authorities maybe? Also I am not familiar with CB so please correct me if I am wrong but if she could not walk and scooted to get around wouldn't that imply that she could not stand? If she can't stand how in the heck did she reach that shinny thing to make the water hot? The whole thing smells rotten in Demark, I am just sayin.

Cerebral Palsy effects ONLY the motor skills and not mental abilities. It can be as little as an arm or a leg or, as in the case of my sister, full body. It is caused by damage to the part of the brain that controls the muscles.

This little girl could scoot which I take to mean movement by using arms while in a sitting position. My sister did it in sort of a frog-like position.

I don't see why a sitting 3-year-old couldn't reach the water faucet of a tub. She may have grabbed it for support or knocked it while slipping in the tub. If she slipped, her CP would have made it difficult to get herself sitting again.

As for the water temp, anything below body temperature is going to feel cool. I know that often re-run water into the tub when I am taking a bath. The temperature my grandson prefers for baths feels freezing to me. It's subjective to a point.

I don't think this was anything but an accident where the kids went off and left the child for a lot longer than they are letting on. I don't understand why they didn't hear her struggling (or notice the quiet). They were busy doing whatever and this poor child drowned.

Exactly what was going through my mind. My parents were . . . extremely strict, let's say . . . and I remember one day helping bring the groceries inside and I had a gallon of milk in my hand. As I was opening the screen door, the milk fell and landed on the cement and started leaking everywhere. It was a complete accident, but I immediately ran up to my room and started crying, on my bed behind locked door. Granted, I just explained crying over spilled milk (he he) which is entirely different - but the first thought that came to mind when I read the sibling's reaction was to run.

(note: still got in trouble for not picking up the gallon of milk to save some of the liquid before it all emptied out of the gallon jug. dang.)
I have LRM disease. You can find me in a
DD 12 step program - soon, hopefully.
