I feel that this father should be charged with something too. He effectively abandonded his child and left him in the care of a woman who would be very angry with him.

I am not diminishing her role in this child's death, but the father has had no regard or care for anyone but himself.

A Travis County jury Friday night found Nichole Turner guilty of injury to a child in the death of 5-year-old Julian Soliz, who had been in her care in April 2010.

The jury deliberated for about 90 minutes before returning the verdict shortly after 8 p.m. Wearing a black, hooded Old Navy sweatshirt, Turner, 24, put her head on the defense table as the jury was polled. She wept as sheriff's deputies led her away in handcuffs.

District Judge Jim Coronado admonished about 35 observers against any outbursts when the verdict in the intensely emotional trial was read — the third such warning of the day. About a dozen sheriff's deputies stood guard in the courtroom. More deputies stood outside the building, and the crowd was allowed to leave only in groups.

The jury will reconvene Monday morning to consider sentencing. Turner could face life in prison.
    [...]

Turner, taking the stand in her own defense, said she made the children chicken strips and macaroni the night before Soliz was found dead.

She said her daughter tried to wake her about 1 a.m., but she told the girl to go back to sleep. Turner said Julian was missing from his room when she woke at 5 a.m.

Prosecutor Victoria Winkeler aggressively went after what she said were inconsistencies in Turner's story and claims that conflicted with testimony from other witnesses.

Turner remained composed throughout a vigorous cross-examination, including Winkeler using cellphone records to dispute Turner's location when she called 911.

"So the longitude and latitude of the Travis County 911 system is also out to get you," Winkeler said. "Is there anything else new today you'd like to add, Miss Turner?"

Sheriff's Detective Ramon Lopez testified Friday that he saw an interview with Turner's daughter, who is not being identified at the request of Coronado, during which the girl spoke of her mother giving a "whupping" to Soliz, striking his head, buttocks, abdomen and legs.

Forensic examiners earlier testified that Soliz bled to death from 59 or more separate bruises. Two full cups of blood were found in his abdomen, they said.

Prosecutors theorized Turner found the boy dead and dumped his body.

Collins questioned how she could have moved the body from her apartment to her car without that event being caught on surveillance video at the complex.

Turner had been in a relationship with the boy's father that soured, although she remained the boy's caregiver.

Prosecutors painted Turner as a spurned woman who took her frustration out on the boy, who looked like his father.

Collins described Leonard Soliz as a negligent father who was in and out of jail, and he contrasted his behavior with the woman who was essentially the boy's sole caregiver for the last month of his life.

"Nichole cared about Julian," Collins said. "Nichole's family cared about Julian."

Me too....me too. My first thought was the size of a liquid measuring cup, that is a massive amount of blood. There was no way he could have survived without medical help. I'm thinking she used more then a belt to "whup" on him. Her poor kids witnessed her beat this child to death. It's really really sad all the way around.

I just want to know what her sentencing is going to be. . . meanwhile reading on articles I missed.

Jurors weep at sight of 5-year-old boy's autopsy photos

Jurors wept Thursday as they stared at pictures of the body of 5-year-old Julian Soliz covered head to toe in bruises. They wiped their eyes. They shook their heads and covered their mouths. They looked at Nichole Turner, who was resting her head on the defense table and averting her eyes from the autopsy photos displayed on a large TV screen."He died as a result of blunt force injuries," said Dr. David Dolinak, chief medical examiner with the Travis County medical examiners office. "The manner of death was homicide."
    [...]
On Thursday evening, the prosecution began wrapping up its case by presenting the autopsy photos of Julian. Before the jury came in, however, prosecutor Victoria Winkeler warned Julian's family members that the photos would be graphic and painful to see. District Judge Jim Coronado said anyone who made a scene in the courtroom would be removed by the bailiff or one of the four sheriff's deputies present."I will not permit outbursts or inappropriate behavior," he said.Photos showed that Julian, a kindergartner at Wells Branch Elementary, had been badly beaten before his death. Almost 60 bruises covered his body, particularly around the buttocks and thighs. Large blocks of his skin were nothing but purple. The boy had tears in his intestines, bleeding in his brain and blood in his abdomen.
    [...]
Soliz said Turner said the child had gotten into a fight at school.Kelly Ann Coad, Julian's gym teacher, testified that Turner told her Julian had been hurt in a fight at his apartment complex. But Julian, who had always been a loving and eager child, changed after that, Coad said. He went from a boy who always participated in gym to one who was clingy and sat out of games."He never played again," Coad said.
And Julian will never play again.

This case and the wait is getting to me more and more as I read it. Julian's last month was a total nightmare. No parent to help transition with school, no parent to care and tuck him into bed at night, not a one who cared enough.

    Exclamation

Turner gets 35 years for death of 5-year-old boy

Nichole Turner stood silently before District Judge Jim Coronado on Monday afternoon, head down, shoulders slumped, waiting for him to officially sentence her to prison for her role in the death of 5-year-old Julian Soliz."Is there any reason you should not be sentenced?" he asked."No," a seemingly dazed Turner answered in a barely audible voice.

Coronado then delivered the sentence decided by the jury after 2 1/2 hours of deliberation: 35 years.

For a few moments, the courtroom remained absolutely still. Then Julian's family walked into the hallway, crying and hugging as television cameras surrounded them.
"It doesn't bring him back," Julian's mother, Jessica Salazar, told reporters. "I'm always going to have that in me: missing him and wishing he were here."

After a week of testimony, Turner was convicted Friday of injury to a child. The six-man, six woman Travis County jury had believed prosecutors' version of the events leading to Julian's April 2010 death: that Turner had beaten the kindergartner with her hands and a belt, that the boy died from internal injuries from that beating and that she later dumped him in the tall grass of a Wells Branch-area yard.Jurors had the option to sentence Turner to as little as probation or as much as life in prison.
    [...]
Throughout the trial, prosecutors portrayed Turner as a desperate woman who was struggling to pay the bills and who took her frustrations out on Julian."That's what it all boils down to," prosecutor Victoria Winkeler told jurors.
Monday during the sentencing phase of the trial.
Prosecutors said that Turner was behind the black eye and broken collarbone Julian suffered in March 2010.Turner also admitted to detectives that she beat Julian with a belt and her hands in the days preceding the child's death, according to testimony.Throughout the trial, defense attorney Kyle Collins pointed out multiple facts that he argued conflicted with the prosecution's case. A hair found on Julian's body could not conclusively be matched to Turner. Surveillance video showed that Turner's car had not moved the night Julian disappeared and only left the apartment complex at the time she says she was looking for him. Additionally, Turner's 7-year-old daughter told jurors that she saw two people carry Julian off the night he disappeared.Prosecutors say Turner wasn't looking for Julian — she was dumping his body. And Turner's daughter, who was 5 at the time of the incident, has told multiple stories about that night, Winkeler said.

. . .Before sentencing, defense witnesses speaking on Turner's behalf described her as a good person who went to church, worked hard, cared for her children and loved her family.
"As a grandmother, I know in my heart she is not guilty," said her grandmother, Gracie Turner.Winkeler urged jurors to remember how much Julian suffered in his final days."There is no life he gets to salvage," she said. "He is gone, not to return."
Well I'm not necessarily disappointed with the 35, far better than some pathetic sentencing I've seen on similar abuse cases. Still, it's final and over for little Julian so it's hard to rejoice. Thinking that Julian might have lived 'till 65, seems 60 would be fair as she stole that from him. We will never know what might have become of Julian.

Rest in peace Julian Thomas Salazar Soliz.

I'll think of you every time I drive by your school yard and as I watch my own little boys grow into young men.
    angel kisses.

A detective testified earlier this week that Turner admitted hitting Julian with her belt and hands for lying a few days before his death. That lie, several court witnesses said, was that he needed glue sticks for school.
I can't even see how this became a concern. Glue sticks?!! They're a normal enough requirement, why get all bent if he really didn't need them?

Soliz, who met Turner six years ago while working in the drive-through of a KFC, had moved into a Shoreline Drive apartment in February 2010 with Julian, Turner, their 7-month old son and her 5-year-old daughter from a previous relationship.

But in early March 2010, Soliz stopped coming home and he started staying with a new girlfriend, he testified to the jury.

Soliz said he saw Julian two or three times after that. The boy's mother was not involved in his life, Soliz said.
Daddy dear couldn't last more than a month in the home with his two children? And he left Julian there on the basis of a one month live-in status?!!!

Soliz, who was 15 when Julian was born, said he couldn't take Julian with him because there wasn't enough room in his new girlfriend's apartment.
So he expected she loved Julian despite the fact that his father was no longer the man in her life, and had just walked out on her to be with another woman, after living with her for a mere month. She'd built up an independent relationship with Julian in the course of a month?!! Liar, liar. Just looking for a place to park his responsibilities while going forth to knock up yet another woman.

Salazar may not have hidden the body in that yard, but she surely was the one who beat him and was responsible for his death. The POS sperm donor is equally responsible, in my eyes. She's taken care of now, but he's still at large, strewing babies around the country and abandoning them without a care for their wellbeing.

I agree @Tundratot the POS sperm donor is as guilty, HE set this whole thing into motion and ignored his own children....5 mo. baby by Turner and Julian, abandonment is how I see it, carelessness, reckless endangerment, neglect.
Not to mention the mother to Julian, also, it was just as much HER responsibility to see to it that SHE as HIS mother was the one caring for Julian, not some pissed off ex.
THEY ALL FAIL. Fail so entirely it's sickening. I can't even begin to wrap my mind around not being their for my kinder kid as he's starting school...ugh, pisses me off.
They both live on to fuck up again on some level as I have no doubt they will. The sperm donor probably feels pretty smug like oh, yeah, crazy ass bitch killed my boy and takes no thought into how HE failed. I tell you I better not see this ass-hole around town don't think I can keep from telling him just how I feel.

The school little Julian was first enrolled in, not the one across town w/ the baby killer, but the first one he was happy and still at home, I drive by that school often. Teachers and children were devastated to here on his death. I'll never forget Julian thinking all that was taken from him. Doesn't help that my neighbour's grandboy looks SO much like Julian, it's a little startling.
