Monica Beresford-Redman 'Survivor' Producer's Wife Found Dead

A Mexican official says former "Survivor" producer Bruce Beresford-Redman is a suspect in his wife's death after reporting her missing in the resort city of Cancun.

The official says the body of Monica Beresford-Redman was found Thursday in a gutter at the swanky Moon Palace resort where they were on a family vacation.

She had not been seen for two days after she reportedly told her husband she was going shopping.

Marcelo Gomez had been friends with Beresford-Redman for nearly 20 years, even featuring her in a Brazilian magazine.

"A lot of people have been calling here to find out. And we don't have any news. We just know she disappeared and we're praying. We've been praying," said Gomez while the search for Beresford-Redman was still active.

Monica's husband, Bruce, spoke to CBS 2/KCAL 9's Serene Branson by phone Wednesday.

He said he couldn't say much because he was hoping to keep the phone lines clear.

"I'm expecting other calls coming in and I'm very hopeful someone will my find wife very soon. She still hasn't been located and we're looking," Bruce told Branson.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is in communication with the U.S. State Department and Embassy in Cancun.

Monica was set to return Thursday, which would have been her birthday.

The official at the attorney general's office in Quintana Roo state, where Cancun is located, spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media about the case.

Monica's body was found in a sewer at the Hotel Moon Palace.

Monica, 42 was staying with her husband and two children at the Hotel Moon Palace. Bruce told police on Tuesday that his wife had left the hotel on Monday and did not return.

Associated Press reports a witness who saw the couple arguing on Sunday at the hotel.

A Mexican newspaper reports that Bruce is under investigation as he seems to be responsible according to a state prosecutor for the Mexican state of Quintana Roo.

    He's been arrested

A former "Survivor" producer was detained today in Cancun, Mexico, as a suspect in his wife's death, a Mexican police spokesman said.

Bruce Beresford-Redman, an American reality television producer whose credits include "Survivor," "The Contender" and "The Restaurant," was arrested after his wife Monica Beresford-Redman's body was discovered in a sewer on the grounds of the Moon Palace Golf and Spa Resort in Cancun at 9:00 a.m. Initial reports suggest that the woman "died of strangulation because of the bruising," according to regional police spokesman Adrian Cardena.

According to CNN, Beresford-Redman reported his wife missing on Tuesday of this week. A friend of the family's told CNN that the couple was in Cancun to reconcile marital difficulties after Beresford-Redman's wife discovered that he was having an affair. Last week, Monica reportedly "cleaned out the couple's bank account and traveled to Hawaii with her children," after which Beresford-Redman allegedly persuaded his wife to meet in Cancun to discuss their differences. Authorities have not yet been able to confirm these details.

Hotel officials have stated that Moon Palace employees have been very cooperative in the investigation and that "safety is always a top concern ... and our guests continue to be safe at this time."

Beresford-Redman is credited on IMDB as a supervising producer on CBS' "Survivor," a role he first fulfilled during the show's fourth incarnation, "Survivor: Marquesas" in February of 2002. His last credit with the series is as a supervising producer on "Survivor: All-Stars" in May of 2004.

In addition to "Survivor," Beresford-Redman is listed as a producer on "The Restaurant," a field producer on "Profiles from the Front Line," a co-executive producer on "The Contender" and an executive producer on "Pimp My Ride" and "Crash Course."

Producer got life insurance days before wife died

RANCHO PALOS VERDES, Calif. (KABC) -- A new report says accused TV producer Bruce Beresford-Redman took out two life insurance policies on his wife, days before the couple's trip to Cancun, Mexico where she was later found murdered.

Bruce Beresford-Redman is a person of interest in the murder of his wife, Monica Beresford-Redman.

The two were on vacation in Cancun with their children when Monica was found dead.

ABC News has learned that Bruce bought two life insurance policies for each member of his family, just days before their trip.

One policy from HTH Worldwide Insurance would pay $50,000 in case of accidental death while traveling.

The second policy from InsureMyTrip.com would pay a considerably higher amount of half a million dollars.

"It's going to poison any kind of public perception of him, which is a real problem," said trial attorney Mark Geragos. "If charges are filed, it certainly doesn't help his case."

‘Survivor’ producer Bruce Beresford-Redmann arrested in California

LOS ANGELES (BNO NEWS) - 'Survivor' producer Bruce Beresford-Redman, who is accused of murdering his wife Monica in Cancun earlier this year, was arrested on Tuesday pursuant to a provisional arrest request from the government of Mexico.

Monica was found dead on April 8 in the sewer of the swanky Moon Palace resort in Cancun, where the couple was vacationing. A witness at the hotel reported seeing the couple arguing days before the murder, and Bruce - who reportedly had scratches on his body - was immediately named as the prime suspect.

Beresford-Redman days later left the country.

He was arrested without incident at his Rancho Palos Verdes residence by the United States Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force and the FBI, the U.S. Attorney's Office for Central District of California said.

The arrest was made after a United States Magistrate Judge on Friday signed an arrest warrant sought in conjunction with the filing of a complaint which outlines Mexico's case against Beresford Redman.

Mexico law states that a person convicted of homicide would be sentenced to a prison term between 12 and 30 years, but it may increase if Beresford-Redman is charged and then convicted of aggravated murder.

Ex-'Survivor' producer extradited to Mexico in wife's slaying

A former "Survivor" producer accused of killing his wife during a family vacation in Cancun was extradited to Mexico on Wednesday to stand trial, his attorney said.

Bruce Beresford-Redman, 40, was released Wednesday morning from the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles and transferred to the custody of U.S. marshals, federal authorities said.

Beresford-Redman is charged in Mexico with aggravated homicide in the death of his wife, Monica Burgos Beresford-Redman, 41.

Her body was found in a waste-water tank near the hotel room where the couple was vacationing with their two young children in April 2010, three days after guests at the resort reported a loud argument coming from the couple's room.

An autopsy determined she suffered a blow to the head with a metal tube or bat and died by asphyxiation.

In a statement, the Burgos family hailed the extradition and said they would follow the case to Mexico and monitor the prosecution.
"After nearly 15 months in United States custody, Bruce will finally be returned to Mexico to stand trial for Monica’s murder," the family statement said.

"This day marks a major milestone in our journey to ensure justice for Monica."

In December, a federal judge ruled there was enough evidence to extradite Beresford-Redman to Mexico to stand trial in his wife’s slaying. Beresford-Redman opted not to appeal that decision.

“He decided to go to Mexico to defend himself,” said Richard Hirsch, one of his attorneys.

“He's always professed his innocence and he hopes that the court in Mexico will assure him a fair trial, after which he's confident he will be exonerated," Hirsch said.
