Another Apparent Shoe Bomber subdued on United flight to Denver

ABC News is reporting that a “suspected shoe bomber” was subdued by Air Marshals aboard United Airlines Flight 663, in route from Washington to Denver this evening.

Federal air marshals subdued the man who attempted to light his shoes on fire, according to ABC News. The report said, while the presence of explosives has not yet been confirmed, it was an attempted ’shoe bomb’ attack.

The plane landed safely in Denver and the plane was parked in a remote area of Denver International Airport. The other passengers were safely removed from the plane.

The suspect has been initially identified as Mohammed al Modadi, a diplomat in the Qatar embassy in Washington, D.C. al Modadi has full diplomatic immunity as the 3rd secretary and vice-consul.

ABC News also reports that two jet fighters were scrambled from Buckley Air Force Base to accompany the flight as it flew the final 40 miles to Denver, where it landed without incident.

Awesome, you beat me to it. I logged back onto the computer just to post this, lol.

Anyday now, we will all need to be nude while flying on a plane.

A man has been detained after he tried to set fire to his shoes on a US flight, reports say.

The man was subdued on United flight 663 from Washington Reagan airport to Denver.

While the presence of explosives has not been confirmed, reports are referring to the incident as a "shoe bomb attempt".

An ABC report identified the suspect as a Qatari diplomat stationed at the country's Washington embassy.

The plane, with more than 160 passengers and crew on board, landed safely at Denver International Airport, where TV footage showed it surrounded by security vehicles.

The US Transportation Security Administration said the suspect was being interviewed by law enforcement officials.

"TSA is monitoring an incident on board United Airlines flight 663 from [Washington to Denver] after receiving initial reports that a Federal Air Marshal responded to a passenger possibly causing a disturbance on board this aircraft," the agency said in a statement.

The incident comes just months after a Nigerian man allegedly tried to detonate a bomb on a passenger jet arriving in the US.

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, was overpowered by passengers and crew shortly before the Northwest Airlines plane landed in Detroit from Amsterdam on 24 December. He has been charged with attempting to destroy a plane.

In 2001, Richard Reid, a British citizen, attempted to blow up a transatlantic passenger jet carrying 197 people with explosives hidden in his shoes.

WASHINGTON — Federal air marshals confronted a passenger who had apparently lighted a cigarette in an airline lavatory on Wednesday night, leading Norad to scramble two fighter jets and a phalanx of law enforcement officials to meet the plane, United Flight 663, when it landed at Denver International Airport.

But there was no immediate indication of terrorism. A federal official speaking on condition that he not be identified by name said that the passenger had gone to the bathroom to smoke a cigarette, claimed he had diplomatic immunity and made sarcastic comments that the marshals took as a threat.

“The situation here is not like the shoe bomber on Christmas,” the official said, referring to the passenger on an Amsterdam-to-Detroit flight who is charged with trying to set off a bomb in his underwear, not his shoe. Various news reports identified the man in Wednesday’s incident as a Qatari diplomat. Dave Klaversma, of Parker, Colo., said wife, Laura, was seated behind the man in first class. Mr. Klaversma said his wife told him that the man got up to go to the bathroom at some point during the flight and that someone else in first class alerted the crew about something the man had done.

When he came out of the bathroom, two people also seated in first class — who turned out to be air marshals — were waiting for him. Mr. Klaversma said his wife told him that the air marshals sat with the man throughout the rest of the flight.

“It was all done very quietly,” he said, “there was no struggle, no uproar.” Mr. Klaversma said his wife told him there was no hysteria and it was all very calm.

The plane, which left Washington at 5:33 p.m. Eastern Time, landed in Denver about 6:50 p.m. Mountain Time.

After the cockpit crew requested that the plane be met by law enforcement, The North American Aerospace Defense Command scrambled two F-16 fighters from Buckley Air Force Base, in Colorado, to intercept the plane. They escorted it for the last five minutes of its flight.

Initial reports said the passenger might have been trying to set something on fire. But several law enforcement officials said no explosive had been found on the plane. Still, the man was being questioned by the F.B.I., as were fellow passengers.A Department of Homeland Security official, speaking on background, said it appeared the man had been smoking a cigarette in the bathroom, had tried to cover it up, and then had made an “unfortunate comment.”

NBC News reported that a half-hour before landing, the air marshal smelled smoke and confronted the man as he emerged from a bathroom. The man claimed he had been trying to set his shoes on fire, the report said.

One passenger, Scott Smith, said the plane made what appeared to be an abrupt, sharp descent outside of Denver without warning. "I’ve never seen a jet liner do that," he said, noting the plane flew low for what seemed like a long period of time. "It was a very unusual approach."

Once the plane landed, he noticed something was odd because flight attendants and pilot didn’t make any welcoming announcements. He said the aircraft sat there for about an hour. A pilot said over the intercom that " we have a situation on the plane. we need to stay here."

The man was then escorted off the plane by the authorities, Mr. Smith said.

I hate flying anyway. Can't imagine peering out and seeing 2 F-16's right beside the plane.
Idiot broke federal law by smoking in the bathroom, makes a joke about setting his shoes on fire and then cries diplomatic immunity? Screw him. If he were that important he'd have his own ride
If I'm on the plane with you, we are all equal.

You realize that you are in far greater danger in a car, don't you? In a car you have FAR more crazy people on the road than in ANY plane. Look at how many idiots commit suicide by driving into the oncoming lane on purpose. What about the people that just crash into you because they are talking on the phone? And the drunk or sleepy drivers! Shit, you're safer in an Iraqi battlefield than you are on the roads.

If it didn't cost so much and I didn't live in such a small market, I would fly everywhere.

I am grateful for the amazing restraint shown by those that make security rules. It's bad enough we have to take off our shoes while going through security. I don't want to have to start taking off my undies, too. I would rather they do the see- through XRay thingy than see some people's hiney. I am never on a plane with the likes of Brad Pitt.

If you ever end up on a plane with Brad Pitt, I think it would be a safe assumption his acting career has...um....CRASHED!!

But don't feel bad, I have never never been on a plane with the likes of Jennifer Aniston.

    Well well well

WASHINGTON – A Qatari diplomat was on his way to meet an imprisoned al-Qaida agent when he touched off a bomb scare by slipping into an airline bathroom for a smoke, officials said Thursday as they announced plans to send the diplomat home.

A State Department official and another person close to the matter say Mohammed Al-Madadi was going to meet Ali Al-Marri in prison. Consular officials frequently visit foreigners held in the United States to make sure they are being treated well.

Al-Marri, a citizen of Qatar, is serving eight years in prison after pleading guilty last year to conspiring to support terrorism. He was arrested after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, accusing him of being a sleeper agent researching poisonous gases and plotting a cyberattack.

The visit with such a high-profile prisoner suggests that Al-Madadi would have been very aware of terrorism concerns when he sneaked into the plane's bathroom for a smoke and, according to authorities, joked about lighting his shoe on fire.

The people who discussed the case did so on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter.

No explosives were found on the plane and authorities said they don't think Al-Madidi was trying to hurt anyone during Wednesday's scare. He enjoys diplomatic immunity from U.S. prosecution and will not be criminally charged, authorities said. The State Department official said Qatar had not yet informed the administration how they will handle the case.

Wednesday's scare came three months after the attempted terror attack on Christmas Day when a Nigerian man allegedly tried to blow up a Detroit-bound airliner. The Nigerian, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, went to the bathroom just before he allegedly tried to ignite his bomb in his seat. Since then, law enforcement, flight crews and passengers have been on high alert for suspicious activity on airplanes. That scare exposed major holes in the country's national security and prompted immediate changes in terror-screening policies.

He's an ASSHOLE. Air travel is bad enough on routine flights. He's a diplomat fer christ sakes. He should conduct himself accordingly. Besides, Washington to Denver is not a long flight. Lots of people who smoke seem to survive several hours on a plane without it. He is just one of those special jerks who thinks rules don't apply to them. Compounded by the *diplomatic immunity*.

According to this article, this was his first US assignment.

Madadi, the son of a Qatari diplomat, attended high school in Virginia and graduated from Marymount University. He received a master's degree in information systems from George Washington University in 2008, after which he returned to Qatar and joined its foreign service. He arrived here late last summer, said a friend who spoke on the condition of anonymity. "He finished his apartment and got a baby bulldog," the friend said. "He just got his new car last week."

Madadi, who served at the embassy for less than a year in what was his first overseas assignment, was on his way to make a consular visit to Ali al-Marri, a Qatari national serving an eight-year sentence for terrorism offenses at the "supermax" prison in Florence, Colo.

I am glad to see the government of Qatar pulling him. It would be pretty arrogant of them to not discipline him in some way. I'm happy it's this way. Serves the little shit right.

As for visiting a terrorist in jail, that's part of the job. If I ever get jailed as a terrorist in a foreign country, I would hope my embassy sends people to check on me. At this point, I can't ascribe any nefarious purpose to that. (there might be - but I don't see anything at this point).

People smoke in airplane bathrooms all the time. They also get arrested/detained for making hijack and bomb jokes in the airport. This guy is no different than any of the usual assholes. He just got caught for 2 things at once and either loses his job or gets a demotion.

Sucks to be him. Great to see a prick get stuck.

Yeah World News Tonight said he was to be fired but no charges
We had a guy from some country here 2 years ago hit and run while he was drunk
Hit and killed 3 old ladies out for a walk
    He had Diplomatic Immunity
But there was such a fire storm over it he ended up being in trouble in his own country over it
So some push it knowing they cant be touched but alot of countries do something about it

Christmas Day Bomber Gets Life In Prison
Man Smuggled Bomb In Underwear Aboard Plane

CNN) -- Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab was sentenced to life in prison Thursday, after pleading guilty to a failed attack in 2009 against a commercial airliner.
AbdulMutallab smuggled a bomb in his underwear aboard the plane on Christmas Day. He pleaded guilty for his role in what officials later determined was an al-Qaida plot.
AbdulMutallab argued a life sentence would be "cruel and unusual punishment," as well as unconstitutional.

Underwear Bomber moves into Supermax cell
This past week, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, dubbed the "Underwear Bomber" after a failed attempt to bring down an airliner in December 2009, joined the ranks of Ted Kaczynski (the Unabomber), Terry Nichols (who conspired with Timothy McVeigh in the Oklahoma City bombing) and others as one of the most notorious criminals housed at ADX Florence, aka Supermax.

Known as the "Alcatraz of the Rockies," Supermax houses more than 450 of the government's most dangerous perpetrators. Described as a "clean version of hell," the facility allows inmates little to no contact with the outside world. "Florence is the most secure prison in the country, and it practices extreme isolation as the norm," says Marc Mauer, director of the Sentencing Project, a prison reform campaign group.

Transferred from the less-restrictive but still high-security penitentiary facility in Florence, Abdulmutallab will serve his life sentence at Supermax for the failed attempt on December 25, 2009 to bring down Northwest Airlines Flight 253 in route from Amsterdam to Detroit. He attempted to ignite a bomb hidden in his underwear shortly before the plane touched down, but the device was a dud and merely smoked, burning Abdulmutallab's groin as crewmembers extinguished the flames and subdued the passenger. Officials say al-Qaeda assisted Abdulmutallab in his attempted mass destruction.

There's been no official comment as to why Abdulmutallab was transferred to the Supermax. The prison's spokesperson, Edmond Ross, has said only that "every individual is reviewed, and they are placed in the appropriate secured facility."

    For every murdered child
We fly with all prevailing winds of change,
For any quirk of fate we may arrange.
    We are not "meek" or "mild";
Don't turn your back when twilight dims the sky -
We'll haunt the perpetrators till they Die
