Richard Labo does parental visitation all wrong

Two Hillsdale County men who left two hungry children in a vehicle during a two-day drinking and partying binge face child abandonment charges, according to authorities.

Jackson County Sheriff's deputies arrested the children's 28-year-old father and 27-year-old uncle about 12:30 a.m. Sunday inside of a bowling alley in Summit Township. Deputies said the men were intoxicated when they were arrested.

Deputies were called to the Summit Lanes Bowling Alley to check on a report of abandoned children in a vehicle. When deputies arrived, they found the 4- and 6-year-old children were found locked inside a vehicle in the parking lot. The children told deputies they had not eaten in two days while their father and uncle drove around drinking and partying.

Police said the children were living in "unsanitary conditions" and that there were beer bottles inside of the vehicle.

Both men face child abandonment charges. They are expected to be arraigned Monday afternoon.

A Department of Human Services investigation is ongoing.

Jackson County Lt. Brad Piros said the children have been returned their mother.

"This was actually part of his visitation. He actually had the children for the weekend," said Piros.

Elizabeth Labo said she is taking steps to terminate her former husband's visitation rights after police said he left their young children alone and hungry in a car while he partied.

"Believe me. I was just as shocked as everyone. I couldn't believe he could do that to my kids," said the boys' mother and the former wife of Richard Labo. Elizabeth Labo lives in Osseo, near Hillsdale.

The boys, ages 6 and 4, are OK and in their mother's care.

District Judge R. Darryl Mazur arraigned their father, Richard Labo, 27, of Hillsdale Township this afternoon on two counts of second-degree child abuse, a felony punishable by a maximum of four years in prison.

Mazur held Labo in jail on a $25,000 bond.

Jackson County sheriff's deputies responded about 12:30 a.m. Sunday to a report of children in a car in the parking lot outside Gypsey's, a bar inside AMF Summit Lanes at 1256 E. McDevitt Ave.

Deputies found the car locked and Richard Labo and his brother intoxicated inside the bowling alley or bar. Monday, Labo was wearing in court what appeared to be bowling shoes.

According to the children, they had been in the older model Pontiac Grand Prix for the "better part of two days," sheriff's Lt. Brad Piros said.

Their father and uncle, Eric Labo, 26, of Quincy, east of Coldwater, had been driving around partying, according to a statement from the sheriff's department.

There were empty and half-empty beer cans in the car and the children had not eaten. Jackson County Sheriff's Sgt. Tommy Schuette gave them some food early Sunday.

Eric Labo also was arrested, but was to be released from jail. He is not to be charged with any crime.

"The uncle has no legal obligation to take care of those kids as long as the father is there," said Chief Assistant Prosecutor Mark Blumer, who appeared at the arraignment and argued Mazur give Richard Labo a high bond. "It doesn't mean what he did is morally right."

Blumer said Elizabeth Labo told authorities her former husband picked up the boys Thursday. He said Elizabeth Labo is not in any trouble.

She has custody, but the boys were visiting their father.

Richard Labo told the judge he just began a job Friday at Damman Poured Walls in Hillsdale Township.

He has committed two prior alcohol-related offenses, Blumer told Mazur. He also has "series of misdemeanors" on his record, Blumer said.

During the arraignment, Labo said little beyond "Yes, your honor." He was wearing a torn gray T-shirt with "Misfits" scrawled across its back.

I'm at a loss for words.

What the hell? I mean, I suppose they could have already been drunk and forgot the kids were there at the start of the weekend, but I envy their ability to remain so trashed they never once wondered where they kids were.

If only binge drinking made men sterile.

JACKSON, Mich., April 5 (UPI) -- Two children were kept inside a car for two days as their father and uncle drove around drinking and partying, Jackson County, Mich., officials alleged.

The children, ages 4 and 6, hadn't been fed into two days and were found Sunday in "unsanitary conditions" inside a locked car, said a release from the Jackson County Sheriff's Office.

The children's 28-year-old father and 27-year-old uncle were arrested in a nearby business on charges of child abandonment. Their names were not released. The father and uncle were being held at the county jail pending review of the case by a prosecutor, The Jackson (Mich.) Citizen Patriot reported Monday.

The children told sheriff's deputies they had been inside the vehicle for two days while their father and uncle drove around drinking beer, cans of which were found inside the car, the Patriot reported.

The children were placed in the care of the state Department of Human Services.

I'm just happy the kids stayed in the car. They may have been scared, but at least they were safer there... sort of.
And why didn;t anyone see them or care is beyond me.

oh come on now, you know if he left them with mom there would have been a huge arguement about he is not being a good father and he would never hear the end of it from the ex wifey. I wonder if the kids drank some of the beer in the car?

If that is the case, then now she won't have that issue with the ex. She is well aware that he ISN'T a good father.

    Father Charged In Abandonment Case
Kids Told Police They Were Hungry
    [...]
JACKSON, Mich. -- A Hillsdale County father accused of leaving two hungry children in a vehicle during a two-day drinking and partying binge was charged Monday with second-degree child abuse.
Jackson County sheriff's deputies arrested the children's 28-year-old father, Richard Labo, and 27-year-old uncle about 12:30 a.m. Sunday inside of a bowling alley in Summit Township. Deputies said the men were intoxicated when they were arrested.

Only Labo was formally charged Monday. Prosecutors said the children's uncle had a moral obligation to protect them, but not a legal one.
    [...]

A judge set bail for Labo at $20,000.
A 911 caller reported children abandoned in a vehicle at the Summit Lanes Bowling Alley.

"There is a Pontiac Grand Prix. It's right outside of Gypsies. … with two toddlers inside the back seat while their mom was inside at the bar," the caller told a 911 dispatcher.

"They looked about 3 and 4. They're really young. I think one might have been sleeping. The other one started to open the door when I came out," she added.

When deputies arrived, they found the 4- and 6-year-old children locked inside a vehicle in the parking lot. The children told deputies they had not eaten in two days while their father and uncle drove around drinking and partying.

Police said the children were living in "unsanitary conditions" and that there were open beer bottles inside the vehicle.

Piros said the father picked the children up Thursday for his regularly scheduled weekend visit.
A Department of Human Services investigation is ongoing.
Jackson County Lt. Brad Piros said the children have been returned to their mother.
    [...]
"They should have been home in their warm little jammies and bed, instead of driving around with their dad who was doing God only knows what with my grandchildren in the back seat," said the children's grandmother, Tanya Walling. "I don't believe he should ever be allowed to see his children unsupervised ever again."
Labo has two alcohol related driving offenses and a series of misdemeanors on his record.

"Almost every attorney on our staff and support staff are parents and or grandparents and you don't like to see this kind of behavior and we take a dim view of it when we see it," said Jackson County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Mark Blumer.
Labo is due back in court in a few weeks.
