Johnny McDanials Jr(17) Wasnt Keeping His Court Date Drowns Trying To Escape Police

A Beaufort County dive team is now in the water, searching for a person who fled from New Bern police early Tuesday morning.

Police say they are searching for a person they believe was breaking into boats at the Hilton Marina. The Sidney Dive Team is now in the water searching for the suspect.

New Bern Police Chief Frank Palombo tells WITN that three breaking and entering suspects were arrested early Tuesday. However, a fourth suspect jumped into the water, apparently to avoid arrest.

Chief Palombo says boat owners called police about the break-ins just before 1 a.m. Tuesday.

"Certainly we've come across a lot of people who don't want to get arrested," Palombo said. "When you're on land, you can run away. When you're on a boat, and we got the docks covered, if you want to try to escape you're going to have to go to the water. Bad idea. The water is cold. It's a cool night, and your risks are greatly increased."

Rescue crews started searching the waters of the Trent River off the marina early Tuesday morning.

    New Bern, NC --
A teenager, who was supposed to be in court today on robbery charges, died after police say he ran from them and jumped into the Trent River.

Police say the body of Johnny McDaniels, Jr. was recovered around 9:15 a.m. They say the 17-year-old jumped into the river after police showed up at the New Bern Grand Marina to investigate the break-ins of boats.

Officers say they threw flotation devices to the teen in an attempt to rescue him. But police say McDaniels was unable to reach the flotation devices and an officer even jumped into the water in an attempt to prevent him from drowning.

Police have identified the others involved in the break-ins as Marcus Davis and, Dahriek Bradley, both 16 years old and from New Bern and a juvenile.
    [...]
Davis and Bradley have been charged with breaking and entering and resist, obstruct and delay a public officer. The two are being held on $100,000 bond each and have a Wednesday court date.
