Michael E. Smith shot dead in his home

Sedalia police are conducting a homicide investigation after a man was killed early Sunday morning after being shot in his home in the 1400 block of West 11th Street.

Michael E. Smith, 30, was pronounced dead at 4:33 a.m. Sunday at Bothwell Regional Health Center.

Smith was shot on the first floor of a home at 1417 W. 11th St., where he was living with his girlfriend. Police received a call of shots fired at 3:51 a.m. from someone at the home, according to Cmdr. Larry Ward, criminal investigations commander.

When police arrived they found Smith lying on the kitchen floor suffering from several gunshot wounds. Friends of the victim were attempting CPR, according to a report from the police department.

Several people were inside the house at the time of the shooting, but no one except Smith was injured. Ward said the others were in different areas within the house, and did not see a shooter.

Police are not releasing suspect information at this time. No one is currently in custody in connection with the homicide.

An autopsy was scheduled for Sunday afternoon.

As of late Sunday afternoon, Ward said police were still following leads and no new information was available.

    Somebody knows something.
"If you ask me, this country could do with a little less motivation. The people who are causing all the trouble seem highly motivated to me. Serial killers, stock swindlers, drug dealers, Christian Republicans. I'm not sure that motivation is always a good thing. You show me a lazy prick lying in bed all day watching TV, and I'll show you a guy who's not causing any trouble." --George Carlin

The Mid-Missouri Major Case Squad was activated Tuesday to assist in a homicide investigation following the death of Michael E. Smith, who was shot in his Sedalia home early Sunday morning.

Smith, 30, was killed Sunday after being shot on the ground floor of his home at 1417 W. 11th St. When police arrived they found Smith lying on the kitchen floor suffering from several gunshot wounds. Friends of the victim were attempting CPR, according to a report from the police department.

Ward said several adults were in the home at the time of the shooting. Some were sleeping or in different areas within the house, and did not see a shooter.

"It does not appear there was forced entry at this time," Ward said.

Ward said investigators also are looking into a suspicious fire that occurred the same morning as the shooting on the 200 block of East Walnut Street at the home of an "acquaintance" of Smith, but Ward said he would not speculate at this time about whether the two incidents are related.

"I wouldn't speculate on that," Ward said. "It could be coincidental or it could be connected. It's one of the leads we're following up on."

No one is in custody in connection with the investigation.
