A Cedar Rapids man was robbed at gunpoint Friday afternoon after being
abducted by a group of teenagers in a van emblazoned with pictures of strippers on its side.
The conspicuous nature of the vehicle helped the police quickly apprehend the alleged robbers inside. Cedar Rapids Police Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said
the van was owned by one of the suspects' parents and "wasn't a wise choice of getaway vehicle."
"One of our officers joked that it was a 'camouflaged' van," Hamblin said.
Justin McDaniel, 20, of Cedar Rapids was walking along 16th Street North-east on Friday when a promotional van for Big Earl's Goldmine, a strip club in Des Moines, pulled up. McDaniel said he was then forced into the van.
In the van, McDaniel said one of the five or six male passengers pointed a sawed-off shotgun at him before demanding he empty his pockets and take off his shoes. A few minutes later McDaniel was dropped off.
Officers were immediately made aware of the robbery and found the distinctive van moments later.
Police identified
Ethan Ayers, 18, as the suspected armed robber.
West Des Moines resident
Tavish Shackford, 18, was charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver after officers found marijuana in the back seat of a squad car Shackford had been alone in.
