An abandoned newborn baby was found dead after being wrapped in a towel and placed outside a shop - after villagers mistook him for a gym kit.

The boy was covered in a towel in a carrier bag at the rear of the village shop.

But the shop is next to a gym - and passers-by mistook the boy for towels accidentally left behind by someone after a work-out.

The towel in a cream-coloured Next carrier bag was first spotted at 1.15pm yesterday by a shopworker at Gurfewak Singh's Spar store at Cwmcarn, near Newport, Gwent.

He said: 'She went out and noticed the bag and asked one of our colleagues to have a look inside. 'They saw some towels and assumed someone had been in the boxing gym and had left their bag behind.'

It was at 6pm that Mr Singh's son went into the lane to talk to neighbours - and decided to look inside the bag.

Mr Singh said: 'He took the first towel off and saw the baby's head.

'He quickly rushed back into the shop and my partner and a shop assistant put the baby on top of a freezer, tried to do CPR and called 999. 'Customers in the shop also tried to help, but I assumed the baby was already dead.

'He had been outside outside in the rain for five hours the towels were soaking wet.

'My son was so shocked, he was crying and asking me questions like: "How can someone just leave a baby like that in a bag?

'He said: "Why didn't the mother tell someone?" I haven't got any answers to give him. I just wish one of us had checked the bag properly.

'If the baby was alive then maybe we could have helped. We could have called an ambulance straight away.'

Choking back tears Mr Singh added: 'I regret it so much. I keep going back over and over it in my mind.'

How dreadful. What a shame, had baby only been discovered sooner he might have lived. Had someone taken baby to a safe haven in the first place we wouldn't be reading on a dead baby.

Police searching for the mum of a newborn baby found abandoned outside a shop today issued photographs of the towel the boy was wrapped in.

The baby was wrapped in a white Dunelm towel featuring a gingerbread man and a heart-shaped design.

Also inside the bag were a blue and white striped long sleeve top from Next for a child aged three to six months, an orange beach towel made in Gran Canaria and a size 14 orange vest top from George at Asda.

Superintendent Jon Burley said: 'We are continuing to appeal for the mother of the baby to come forward as we are extremely concerned about her health and wellbeing and need to make sure she gets the medical treatment she may require.

'We are hopeful that by releasing the photographs of the baby clothes and items someone might recognise them.

'Someone must know who the mother is as. Until recently she would have been heavily pregnant.'

The mother of a new born baby boy discovered dead behind a convenience store has been located, police have revealed.

A woman in her 20s from the Risca area, near Newport, south Wales, was held on suspicion of concealment of a birth.

The arrest came nine days after the baby was discovered abandoned behind a Spar shop in Cwmcarn.

The baby, who was no more than 24 hours old, was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital.

A post mortem into the cause of death later proved inconclusive.

Police, who named the baby Patrick, launched a major search for his mother in the wake of the tragic find on March 18.

Medical professionals and specially trained support staff saw the woman, who was released on police bail.

The mother and her family are being supported by specially trained officers, a spokesman said.

He added: 'The female has been arrested on suspicion of concealment of a birth and has been released on police bail pending further inquiries.

A verdict of stillbirth was recorded by coroner David Bowen at Newport Coroner's Court.

The inquest heard how police officers named the baby Patrick because he was discovered the day after St Patrick's Day.

Det Sgt O'Keefe said the baby's mother had been arrested and bailed.

"She admitted leaving the baby and claimed the infant was stillborn," he said.

Dr Stephen Leadbeatter, who conducted the post-mortem examination, said there was no evidence to the contrary.

A second inquest in Newport heard how a council worker discovered the decomposing body of a baby in an attic in Pengam, Caerphilly.

The discovery was made last September but the body could have been in the attic for more than a year, the inquest was told.

A labourer found the baby among plastic bags and boxes as he was clearing the attic of a repossessed house.

DC Ian Thomas told the inquest that following the discovery, a former tenant handed herself in to police.

She claimed the baby was stillborn and said she had concealed her pregnancy as she wanted to hide it from her family and friends.

The post mortem examination was unable to determine the cause of death and Mr Bowen recorded an open verdict.

Aw so baby WAS stillborn. She claims she was trying to hide baby from family and friends....and how did they NOT notice she was pregnant? suddenly pounds lighter? that kind of thing always baffles me.

Well, her secret is out now, her planned failed. I wonder tho if baby would have been born alive, would she have then kept baby or left him as she did? She's in her twenties not 12, I think family and friends would have gotten over her having a baby.
