Police said a 77-year-old Iowa City man swallowed the marijuana he had hidden on him while in police custody.
Howard R. Switzer, of 71 Commercial Ct., was witnessed by an officer making a left turn into oncoming traffic at 6:20 p.m. Jan. 31, police said. Police said Switzer’s license is revoked and he was placed under arrest for driving while revoked.
Due to his age, Switzer was handcuffed in the front, police said. However, while seated in the back of a squad car, Switzer reached into an interior coat pocket, took out a plastic tube containing marijuana and swallowed most of the contents, police said.
Police said Switzer then dropped the tube and a glass pipe with burnt marijuana residue on the floor of the squad car. Police said Switzer has two previous marijuana convictions and a pending third possession of a controlled substance charge.
Switzer was charged with third or subsequent offense possession of marijuana and obstructing prosecution, both aggravated misdemeanors.
Switzer was released on his own recognizance.
