A Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s lieutenant who has been in jail since Tuesday is facing additional charges.

John Mitchell Tomlinson, 46 of Navarre, was charged with five counts of sexual battery on a new victim, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Tomlinson was initially arrested Tuesday for 120 counts of sexual battery on a child between the ages of 12 and 18. He will be tried in Walton County because he was the head of Santa Rosa County’s court security when he was arrested.

Sheriff Wendell Hall placed Tomlinson on paid administrative leave when he was arrested, according to Marc Ward with the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office.

Tomlinson is expected to remain on leave until the criminal process is resolved, he said.

"If these allegations are true, I will be very disappointed in Lt. Tomlinson’s behavior," Sheriff Wendell Hall said in a statement. "However, if he’s found guilty he should be punished like any other person that commits this type of crime."

When questioned about why Tomlinson was not put on leave when the allegations came to light back on March 3, Ward declined to comment. Ward said he would provide an answer at a later date. At press time, the question remained unanswered.

Just throw this guy in general pop and tell the inmates he's a cop AND a child molester. He won't last five minutes.

How the fuck does someone accumulate 125 charges and only wind up on PAID ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE? His ass should be fired. There is no way I am going to believe someone somehow managed to fabricate 125 charges of child rape against a cop without it being totally obvious that it was all a fabrication. It wasn't one or two times; it was 125 times at least...since we all know they don't always give a single charges for each offense.

Tuesday, the state dropped 117 sexual battery counts and three sexual battery by a custodial authority counts against John Mitchell Tomlinson, 46. He pleaded not guilty to the remaining charges against him –three counts of capital sexual battery on a child less than 12 years old and three counts of sexual battery by a custodial authority.

The state dropped the vast majority of the charges to make Tomlinson’s trial proceed faster; a conviction on any one of the remaining sexual battery charges carries a life sentence.

At the time of his arrest, Tomlinson was a Lieutenant with the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office. He remains in the Walton County Jail, but will be transferred back to Santa Rosa County one week prior to his trial.
