Lost Boy Corey Haim dead at 38

Actor Corey Haim, who appeared in a number of movies during the 1980s, died early Wednesday of a possible drug overdose after being taken to a hospital, Los Angeles police said.

Haim, 38, was taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Burbank, California, where he was pronounced dead at about 3:30 a.m. PT Wednesday (6:30 a.m. ET), police Sgt. Frank Albarran said.

The death appears to be accidental, possibly an overdose, Albarran said.

Haim's most famous role was in the 1987 movie "The Lost Boys" in which he appeared with his frequent co-star, Corey Feldman.

There will always be a piece of my heart dedicated to the boys of the 80s... unfortunately they are dying off one by one... River, Corey Haim... I'm sure there's someone else I'm forgetting too. They were the cute guys who weren't so cute that they were out of my league.

Unfortunately, that is probably true... there's nothing Hollywood likes more than profiting off the recently deceased... costs them little to nothing with big profit in sight.

Corey Haim had been suffering from flu-like symptoms for several days before finally stumbling in front of his mother at her Los Angeles apartment early Wednesday morning, a coroner spokesman confirms.

"Some time after midnight, he got up, he was dizzy and unsteady on his feet and knelt down," L.A. County Coroner Assistant Chief Ed Winter tells PEOPLE. "His mom helped him to a bed and he became unresponsive in about a minute or so. She dialed 911 and he was pronounced dead at a local hospital at 2:15 a.m."

The death of the former '80s heartthrob at age 38 has been ruled inconclusive pending an autopsy and toxicology test. But Winter says, "LAPD believes it was a possible drug overdose."

Haim had been living with [his] mother as she battled cancer, Judy Haim tells RadarOnline. “I am a cancer victim and Corey was helping me at home,” she said. “He was a good boy. I’m devastated by his death.”

Winter confirms that four prescription medication bottles were found in the home in Corey Haim's name. Winter wouldn't verify what drugs they were, though he says no illegal drugs were found.

When will people learn? I'm of the opinion that TOO many damn drugs are over the counter. I would have never thought that in the past but cold/flu medications, ALL cold/flu medications, need to be either prescription only OR do what they do in Europe and you must talk to a Pharmacist who tells you what to take for your symptoms and knows what drugs you are on and then gives you a SMALL supply of medication.

What do OTC drugs have to do with it?

I have no need or desire to talk to a damned pharmacist when I am capable of logic and reading. Not my problem if other people can't.

Cold medications do absolutely nothing to improve illness, they improve symptoms (and not very well either). They are demonstrably one of the most dangerous products on the market. They are much worse than marijuana and even alcohol. There is no benefit to anyone to taking cold medication. In fact, it makes people SICKER because they go to work and infect everyone else by taking it. People are killing themselves at alarming rates with cold medication... not just movie stars. Of course, the people we hear about are movie stars... in a very short time... Heath Ledger, Brittany Murphy and now Corey Haim are all dead due to cold medication. How much is too much? If you have sinus problems, a Breathe Right strip or a Neti pot does much more to help with the symptoms and people don't die from using both of them together. There's a reason that pharmacists go to school as long as doctors, it's a LOT of shit to learn and know and, right now, drugs are in the hands of anyone with money, they can have a 50 IQ, not know how to read, etc. All for something that doesn't benefit society or even really the person using it because they really work by getting you loopy so you don't give a shit that you feel bad or by putting you to sleep.

Nothing that Brittany Murphy took together said anything about not taking it together... but a pharmacist would have known.

It says Haim had 4 PRESCRIPTION medications in the home. OTC has nothing to do with it. He had "flu like symptoms" that may or may not have had anything to do with the prescriptions. They could have been for back pain and he took a ton of them. The symptoms could be flu (or a brain tumor for all we know) and nothing to do with why a drug addict was taking meds.

If people are too stupid to read a label, it is unreasonable to expect them to follow a pharmacists directions. You can't protect the world from it's own stupidity.

Heath Ledger died from mixing prescription drugs (with labels clearly instructing dose and what not to mix it with). They are still unsure what caused Brittany Murphy's death but evidence points to misuse of prescriptions drugs as well. As far as Corey Haim goes, the autopsy and toxicology results haven't been released yet so we have no idea what caused his death.

I work in medicine and am about 8 months out from my M.D. and I can tell you that alcohol kills a LOT more people than folks who take cold medicine. (even ones who alter the dose/chemical composite with the goal of getting high) A lot of cold medicines are fairly harmless (like guaifenesin) and will help the person get better faster by breaking up thick mucos in the lungs.

There are clearly written warnings on OTC such as benedryl and dexomethorphan explaining that drowsiness is a side effect and caution should be used. As far people going to work sick and infecting everyone, there are plenty of imbeciles who will do this regardless of severity of symptoms. My advice is to was your hands often and don't touch your face....there are idiots amuk everywhere. We can't have a babysitting state because some people are determined to abuse their meds (OTC or prescribed) or if they choose to ignore the warning labels.

I suspect they are going to fnd that this guy abused drugs, most likely prescription, and that is what killed him.

Wait, where is it that he died from cold medicine?
Not sure about you but I'm thinking drugs, not the kind you buy named Benedryl.
He was on Larry King a few years ago and even said he was a 'chronic relasper'

Though it's a shame. Loved him back in the day

    RIP Corey

He wasn't on my big time list of 80's boys I swooned over, but he did seem like a sweet guy. I really liked him in Stephen King's Silver Bullet, a fave TV movie.

Drugs, always seems to be drugs doing people in. So sad for him and his mom, but at least she was there with him. Rest in peace Corey, I hope you found peace.

The official autopsy results for Corey Haim have not been released publicly, but his mother says the coroner called her to disclose the actor suffered pulmonary congestion.

In an interview with Access Hollywood, Judy Haim says an autopsy also found he had an enlarged heart along with the water in the lungs.

What role those factors played, if any, in Haim's death isn't known. L.A. Coroner Chief Craig Harvey confirms that the autopsy was completed at 11 a.m. Thursday, but notes, "There is no final cause of death at this time."

"The final cause of death has been deferred pending additional tests that have been ordered," he says.

Shortly before his death Wednesday at age 38, Haim complained of flu-like symptoms and had a high fever. His former fiancée, Tiffany Shepis, also tells PEOPLE the actor had long suffered from heart problems.

"Every time he would go to a doctor they'd tell him he had really bad arrhythmia, probably due to clogged arteries," she says. "They all said he should have it taken care of. But, being from Canada, his insurance was there, so he never went and got it done."
    http://www.miamiherald.com/2010/03/1...orey-haim.html

While they may or may not have played a role in his death, his name has been linked to an illegal prescription drug ring at some point.
The late actor Corey Haim's name was found on an illegal prescription of a painkiller found during an investigation into a major California drug ring, according to a statement issued Friday by state Attorney General Jerry Brown.

Records of an OxyContin prescription in Haim's name were found as Brown's office looked into a ring that allegedly obtained prescription pads and used doctors' stolen identities to issue them, according to the Attorney General.

Funeral costs for actor Corey Haim will be paid for by the authorities in charge of his native Toronto, Canada, according to the late star's grieving mother.

The Lost Boys star died of a suspected drug overdose in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

His family members revealed they were struggling to gather enough money to fly his body home and began selling the late actor's possessions on eBay as a way for fans to donate to funeral costs.

Executives at Startifacts, the company helping to sell Haim's belongings online, subsequently offered to hand the actor's cancer-stricken mother, Judy Haim, a $20,000 check ahead of the memorial instead of making her wait for all of the money to come through once the online auctions finish.

However, the matriarch tells Access Hollywood Startifacts bosses have not yet provided the funds, and she has accepted an offer from Toronto officials to pay for burial expenses.

Haim will be buried in Toronto, Canada on Tuesday.

Arrest linked to Corey Haim death
Los Angeles, California (CNN) -- An arrest has been made in connection with the investigation of actor Corey Haim's death, a spokesman for California's attorney general said Wednesday.

Attorney General Jerry Brown is not revealing details of the arrest, his office said, but it comes soon after he revealed that pharmacy records show the actor got thousands of dangerous pills from dozens of doctors in the past year.

That really bites that he died so young. He's only ten years older than me. Maybe this can be used for good, ya know? Maybe those who are mixing their drugs will look at this and say "You know what? Death sounds pretty bad..."
But here I go wishing again.

The shame isn't about a doctor giving him pills. He was a grown man, he would have found a way to get pills if he wanted them.
The shame is that this person, who everyone thought 'had it all' felt so lonely. That he felt like the only escape was by a substance.
It's a shame that he didn't realize it's normal to feel that way, and that it's better to surround yourself with friends and family.
It's a shame that when he was finally doing something productive (helping his mother through her cancer) he caused more pain to her than cancer could ever bring.
No one should outlive their child.
No one should have to find their child dead due to their own stupidity.

In the end, I agree with you though....it's just a shame.
