Man Pleads No Contest To Murdering Ex and Storing Her In Freezer

I didn't put the names in the headline because she hasn't been identified and he hasn't been arrested.

Town police said this afternoon they expect to make an arrest "any time" in the murder of a woman whose body was found in a freezer inside a house at 1184 Gold Star Highway.

A press conference is scheduled for 3 p.m.

About 10:20 Sunday night, a man came in to the Groton City Police Department lobby and reported an "unusual incident" in Groton Town. The city dispatcher and shift commander gave the information to town police and detained the man until town officers arrived. At that point the investigation was turned over to Groton Town police.
Police do not have anyone in custody and offered no further information on the death. Town police did say that reports in other media outlets that someone is in custody are incorrect.

Joyce Ceravolo said her husband, Dominick Ceravolo, rents the house to a woman named Madeline Brisson. Police would not say if Brisson was the victim found inside.

Ceravolo said her husband went to the house Friday and Saturday and knocked on the door because Brisson was behind on her rent. She said she heard Brisson recently lost her job. She did not know where she worked.

"My husband went there on Friday and knocked on her door and got no answer," said Ceravolo. "He went there on Saturday and a guy answered the door and he said that she went away for a couple of days."

Ceravolo said her husband did not know the man.

She also noted that her son on Friday saw Brisson's chocolate Labrador running loose in the yard, which was rare because the dog was always with Brisson.

"I never met her," said Ceravolo. "She paid her rent on time until recently."

I've been reading at this site all morning. They've since taken the guy and the victim's name out of all the articles.

A woman's body was found in the freezer of a Groton home Sunday night.

Sources told Eyewitness News that Lewis Otero walked into the police department on Sunday and confessed to putting a body in the freezer of his Gold Star Highway home.

Police said the body was discovered a short time later.

Investigators were at the home Monday morning and detectives in HAZMAT suits were combing the property.

Police said they were waiting for the medical examiner to positively confirm the body is that of Otero's girlfriend, Madeleine Brisson, who lives with Otero in the home.

The landlord of the property runs an auto garage business behind the home and said he knocked on the home's door on Friday to get rent and no one answered.

The landlord, Dominic Ceravolo, said it thought it was strange that no one answered and that he went back on Saturday to try again.

Ceravolo said a familiar man, who he believed to be Otero, answered the door.

"He came to the door and I said, 'Where's Madeleine?' He said 'She should be back in a couple of days,' " Ceravolo said.

Ceravolo said he keeps a close eye on the property and never saw the man before this weekend.

Police said they had questioned Otero at the police department, but had not arrested him.

Groton, Conn. — Groton police say they have arrested a 49-year-old town man in connection with the death of a woman whose body was found in a freezer.

Lt. Steven Sinagra says Luis F. Otero was charged Monday with one count of murder. The woman's name was not immediately released because police were in the process of notifying her next of kin.

Police say her body was found Sunday night in a freezer in a home on Gold Star Highway. Sinagra says that was Otero's last known address, but police are unsure whether it was his permanent home.

Otero was being held on $2 million bond Monday and is due Tuesday in New London Superior Court. It wasn't immediately known if he had an attorney.

The local "News" has a tentative identification:
Police said they were waiting for the medical examiner to positively confirm the body is that of Otero's girlfriend, Madeleine Brisson, who lives with Otero in the home.

News Channel 8 got an exclusive interview with Madeline Brisson's ex-husband who is devastated about how her life ended.

"It's just really sad. She didn't deserve that; definitely not that," said Michael Brisson, Madeline Brisson's ex-husband.

The victim's landlord said Otero told police he had put Madeline Brisson's body in the freezer.

"Good thing he did; they never would have found her in that freezer. The freezer was in the cellar. [It's] one of them chest freezers you open up; she was a small woman; thin. I got no idea what he did to her; how she died," said Landlord Dominic Ceravolo.

Madeline Brisson had once owned laundromats in Mystic and Stonington which is where Michael Brisson was reintroduced to the woman he knew from elementary school. He, and so many others, described her as a kind hard working woman; an angel.

"God must have needed another angel that's all I got to say," said Michael Brisson.

A Groton man accused of murdering his girlfriend and then discarding her body in a freezer was arraigned today at G.A. 10 in New London.

During the brief court hearing, Luis F. Otero, 49, was wearing blue jeans and a black shirt that accentuated his muscular build.

    He stood silent.

A bail commissioner said that Otero's last conviction was in 1995 for third-degree assault and unlawful restraint. He was sentenced to four years in prison, suspended after one year served followed by three years probation.

In that case, Otero was found guilty of beating up his girlfriend and binding her with masking tape when she tried to break off their relationship.

Details of Sunday's murder were unavailable as the warrant was sealed for 14 days.

Prosecutor Michael Kennedy requested that the bond remain at $2 million because the state has a "strong case" against Otero.

Public Defender Shawn Tiernan requested that bond be set at $100,000 because Otero has ties in the community.

Tiernan noted that Otero has retained private counsel and has been told not to speak to anyone.

Information on who is representing Otero was not available because an appearance form was not in his file.

Judge Kevin P. McMahon sided with the prosecution and kept the bond at $2 million.

"Without prejudicing the case it doesn't get much stronger than this," said McMahon.

The Office of the Chief State Medical Examiner said an autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday for Brisson.

Her dog, a chocolate Labrador, was also seen running in her yard, which was rare because the dog was always with her. The dog is safe and with the Groton Town police.
Otero's case was transferred to Part A in New London, where the most serious cases are heard, for March 24.

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- A newly released arrest warrant says a Connecticut man charged with killing a woman admitted he put her body in a freezer after having "flipped out" over her implied lesbian affair with his daughter.

Forty-nine-year-old Luis Otero is charged with murder in the death of Madeline Brisson, whose body was found March 7 in a freezer at her Groton home.

A New London Superior Court judge on Wednesday unsealed the arrest warrant, which doesn't say how the 50-year-old Brisson died. An autopsy was inconclusive and more tests are being done.

The warrant says Otero told a friend he "flipped out" when Brisson told him to move out of her house and implied an affair with his daughter.

Otero is being held on $2 million bond and is due back in court April 14.

An arrest warrant for a Connecticut man charged with killing a woman and stuffing her body in a freezer says he "flipped out" when he found out the woman was having an affair with his daughter.

The Hartford Courant reports that 49-year-old Luis Otero (pictured) of Groton confessed to his sister Sandra William on March 7 that he had killed Madeline Brisson. Otero turned himself over to police a few hours later.

According to the police report, Otero and Brisson were living together as roommates. Otero told police that on the night of the killing, Brisson had been drinking and accused him of not being able to properly care for his daughter, who is mentally challenged.
Otero then said Brisson told him the two had been sleeping together.

According to reports, Brisson was out to friends and family and Otero knew she was a lesbian. Otero allegedly told police exactly where to find the body and said he’d left the lights on for the officers.

A man accused of killing Madeline Brisson in March and stuffing her body in a freezer at her Groton home has waived his right to a probable cause hearing.

The case of Luis F. Otero, 49, was on the docket Wednesday in New London Superior Court. His attorney, Bruce A. Sturman, waived the hearing and entered a plea of not guilty on Otero's behalf. Defendants in murder cases are entitled within 60 days of their arrest to a hearing at which the state must convince a judge there is enough evidence for the case to move forward.

According to police, Otero turned himself in on March 7 and said he had put a body in the freezer at 1184 Gold Star Highway. The body was frozen solid when it was recovered by police, and the state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner's initial autopsy exam was not conclusive as to the cause and manner of Brisson's death. A staff member at the medical examiner's office said this week that there still is no cause and manner of death listed in the case.

Otero and Brisson had dated, and he had been living with her to help cover the rent. Friends of Brisson said he had threatened to kill her and put her body in a freezer.

He is being held on a $2 million bond at the MacDougall-Walker Correction Institution and is due back on court on July 20.

Luis Otero, accused of killing his Groton housemate last year and putting her body in a freezer, has rejected an offer from the state to plead guilty to murder in exchange for a 27-year prison sentence.

Otero, 50, is accused of killing Madeline J. Brisson, who he had dated and with whom he was living at 1184 Gold Star Highway to help her cover the rent. Otero turned himself in on March 7, 2010, saying he had put a body into the freezer at that address. The body of Brisson, 50, was frozen solid, according to police, and the state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner could not immediately determine the cause and manner of her death. The office later ruled Brisson was a homicide victim who had died of blunt traumatic injuries and asphyxia.

Otero, who has been held in lieu of $2 million bond since his arrest, appeared in New London Superior Court this morning with his attorney, Bruce A. Sturman. Sturman notified the court that Otero was rejecting the state’s plea offer and would like a trial. Judge Patrick J. Clifford told Otero the offer, which had been considered too lenient by the victim’s family, is now off the table. Murder carries a minimum sentence of 25 years in prison and a maximum of 60 years.

Post Man Pleads No Contest To Murdering Ex and Storing Her In Freezer

Groton, CT – On August 31st, Luis Otero, now 51, pleaded no contest to charges that he murdered his ex-girlfriend, Madeline Brisson, 51, in March of 2010.
Otero and Brisson had once been romantically involved, and though the affair had ended, Otero was still living under her roof.* Domestic disputes between the two were not unheard-of.* In fact, Otero had threatened Brisson’s life some time before her murder, telling her he would kill her and put her in a freezer.* Brisson had even advised her sisters that if she ever came up missing, they should check the freezer.
In early-March of 2010, Otero followed through on his threat after a heated argument in which Brisson told Otero that he needed to move out of her house and then implied that she was going to pursue a lesbian relationship with Otero’s daughter, who is described as “mentally challenged.”
Brisson’s cause of death was listed as blunt force trauma and asphyxia, so I’m figuring you guys are smart enough to figure out what happened there.
Otero placed Brisson’s body in a freezer in their home and waited several days before turning himself in to police.* On March 7th, officers found Brisson’s corpse frozen solid, indicating that it had been on ice for several days.…

Family members of murder victim Madeline J. Brisson, whose body was discovered in a freezer at her home on Gold Star Highway in Groton two years ago, wept as her killer was sentenced to 28 1/2 years in prison this morning in New London Superior court.
    [...]

Prosecutor Paul J. Narducci said the state’s case had some weaknesses due to the nature of Brisson’s death and that Otero could have mounted a “colorable defense” on the cause of death. Under the circumstances, Narducci said the sentence is fair, though he is aware the victim’s family is not pleased.

Judge Clifford said his heart goes out to the family.

“There’s no number that seems fair to you,” Clifford said. “At 52 years of age, this might turn out to be a life sentence.”

As Judicial Marshals led Otero back to the courthouse lockup, somebody from the victim’s family uttered, “Rot.”

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, Otero told a friend that five days earlier Brisson had told him she was having Otero’s daughter move into the house and he had to move out, implying that the women were going to be lovers.'

Otero told the friend that he “'flipped out,’” the warrant said. “... This caused (the friend) to ask Otero if Madeline was ‘still with us.’ Otero replied, ‘No.’”

Otero called his sister the same day and relayed a similar story, the warrant said.

He told his sister he was going to turn himself in to police and that he was “having nightmares about what he had done,” the warrant said.
