FRUITLAND, N.M -- A Michigan man who has spent nine years on the run has been captured in northwestern New Mexico.

New Mexico state police said 34-year-old Michael Smith, who was living under the alias Michael Redd, was captured Thursday at the San Juan Generating Station where he was working.

Authorities said Smith is facing charges of escape from Michigan's Department of Corrections. He escaped from prison in 2001 after being convicted of attempted assault, fraud and possession of marijuana.

State Police Lt. Eric Garcia said authorities were alerted to Smith's location when he submitted fingerprints as a pre-employment requirement after he applied to be a truck driver.

Deputy U.S. Marshal Chris Spencer said it's rare for someone to be on the run for like this for nine years.
