Melinda Dennehy's Naked Pictures Popular with High School Students, Not With Police

LONDONDERRY, N.H. (CBS/WBZ) Perhaps New Hampshire high school teacher Melinda Dennehy missed the orientation session when they explained that sending your naked photos to a student is sort of a bad idea.

Police say the 41-year-old English teacher sent four sexy shots of herself to a 15-year-old male student at Londonderry High School. The student, it seems, thought that was pretty nifty. Police say he forwarded the images to his friends.

According to police documents, the pictures were sent two months ago. Investigators say they obtained a copy of one of the photos and co-workers identified Dennehy.

The teen told police that Dennehy had "continuously sent him text messages," some of which were sexually explicit. He also claimed that she "kissed him twice on two separate occasions" in a classroom at school.

Dennehy, of Hampstead, turned herself in to Londonderry police Friday. She is charged with one felony count of indecent exposure. Hampstead is 30 miles northwest from Concord.

The mother of two has since been freed on bail, but was ordered to stay away from anyone under 16. Police do not know of any other victims.

Dennehy will be arraigned in Derry District Court April 30.

So I wonder if the attention of a 15yo was worth losing her job? And what the hell is she going to give her kids as an explanation? Kinda hard to expect your kids to be morally oriented where you're not. Idiot.

What amazes me is that these teachers are still doing this shit after the countless ones we have seen on the news that have been caught doing exactly this. I guess they all think that they wont be caught.

I'm always amazed at how a judges mind works at times
so does that mean 17 year olds are OK?
I've seen the same thing before with like no contact with anyone under 14 years old
so a 15 year old is OK, they cut it off at the offense age like that's some wall

LONDONDERRY, N.H. -- A Londonderry teacher accused of e-mailing nude photos of herself to a student has resigned.

Melinda Dennehy, 41, resigned from her English teaching position at Londonderry High School earlier this month, school officials said.

The news came as the family of the student filed a formal complaint with police because Dennehy was in the same building as the 15-year-old boy last weekend. The two were at the same gymnastics competition in Hampstead, N.H.

"Both families have young daughters that are in gymnastics," said Kevin Coyle, Londonderry police prosecutor. "They will occasionally be at the same meets."

The owner of the Phanzone sports center in Hampstead said both sides were alerted to the situation just before the competition. The family said Denney sat 125 feet away from them on the other side of the room.

The teen's father filed a report with Hampstead police later in the week.

"He contacted us to make an allegation of a violation of Ms. Dennehy's bail conditions," said Lt. John Frazier.

Dennehy was charged with felony indecent exposure in early March, and as part of her bail conditions, she was ordered to stay away from the teen. But Londonderry police said they have spoken with Dennehy's lawyer, and Dennehy has agreed not to attend her daughter's future gymnastics meets.

"Why she didn't leave, we don't know clearly," Coyle said. "In my opinion, she should have left, but she didn't, and we've addressed that."

Until recently, Dennehy has been on paid administrative leave from the school. But the job opening for her former sophomore English position has already been posted.

"Melinda Dennehy is no longer an employee in the Londonderry School District," said Superintendent Nate Greenberg. "We received a resignation letter, and it was effective the 15th of March."

Dennehy's lawyer did not return a call to News 9. The student's father said Hampstead police are still investigating whether Dennehy violated her bail conditions.

"I am truly sorry for my actions and poor judgment," Dennehy told the court yesterday. "I wish the student and his family well."

Dennehy appeared in Derry District Court yesterday morning to plead guilty to a class A misdemeanor count of indecent exposure. She was given a 12-month suspended sentence, and had her teaching certification suspended indefinitely.

As a result of the plea agreement, the original felony charge against Dennehy was reduced to a misdemeanor. The felony charge carried a maximum sentence of three and a half to seven years in prison.

The reduced charge also means Dennehy won't have to register as a sex offender. State law requires a person to be convicted of two misdemeanor-level indecent exposure charges before they are considered a sex offender.

Londonderry police prosecutor Kevin Coyle said the victim and his family were pleased with the agreement.

"We had been discussing it with all the parties involved," Coyle said. "It came to be all the parties wanted to put this behind them, and this is the resolution we came up with that everyone agreed was fair."

The suspension of Dennehy's teaching certification will last at least two years, and likely much longer, Coyle said.

"That is ultimately up to the Department of Education, but it is my understanding she will not be able to get it back," he said.

Dennehy's 12-month suspended sentence is contingent upon two years of good behavior. She also cannot have any contact with the victim or his family.

Three years after completing all the terms of her sentence, Dennehy could petition to have the conviction annulled, which would wipe it from her record almost completely.
