Police have seized dozens of dogs that they believe may have been mistreated by a breeder in southeast Bexar County.

On Thursday afternoon, Elmendorf police seized about 60 dogs from a home near 1604 and Highway 181. Many of the dogs are sick, officials say.

Elmendorf Police chief A.D. Carroll says they have been investigating complaints of animal abuse and neglect from the breeder, Small Paws Puppies. The company's website says that they are a breeder of hybrids and Pomeranians.

Carroll says his department received a complaint about the breeder, which led officials to the site of the seizure. Carroll says this is just the beginning of his investigation into the breeder.

Police aren't the only ones who were tipped off about the breeder. One Small Paws customer sent KENS 5 a letter describing a bad experience with the company. The person purchased a dog from Small Paws and says the dog was sick with cancer.

The letter went on to describe horrible living conditions for the dogs at the breeder's home.
