An East Chicago woman is charged with leaving a bag of cocaine in her son's sock that was discovered by an aunt in Schererville on Jan. 22.
Araceli Gutierrez, 34, is charged with neglect of a dependent, a Class D felony.
Schererville police did not provide the date of Gutierrez's arrest as of early Monday.
Gutierrez's sister told police that Araceli dropped off her 3-year-old son with her on the night of Jan. 22, but never gave her a time when she would come back for him.
The sister bathed the son then dressed him in some clothes that Gutierrez had left for him. The son told her there was something in his left sock. He pulled out a clear wrapper and she first thought it was a candy wrapper, but it contained a white powder.
She contacted a Child Protective Services caseworker about the matter, who came to investigate along with police.
In 2008, Gutierrez was charged with child neglect when her son was found on a rooftop while she was asleep in her apartment.
