"SAN DIEGO - A 10-week-old puppy that was choked by its owner died Friday morning.
According to Dan DeSousa of the San Diego Department of Animal Services, the puppy -- a Chocolate Labrador Retriever named Coco -- went into cardiac arrest Friday morning and could not be saved.
The dog was brought to an emergency veterinary clinic by its owner, 50-year-old David Hale Warner, around 2 a.m. Wednesday morning. At that time, the puppy was unable to walk and had difficulty breathing. It had fluid in its lungs, red-tinged saliva and blue gums.
According to DeSousa, the couple was in bed with the dog when it nipped Warner's girlfriend on the nose. Later, while she was on the phone, the puppy began to bark, and that's when Warner choked it. He held the puppy down for about 20 seconds, holding it forcefully around the neck, throat and ear. When Warner realized what he had done, he took the puppy to the veterinary hospital.
Despite the efforts of the veterinary staff, DeSousa said that the injuries the dog sustained from the attack were simply too severe.
Warner was booked at the San Diego Detention Center on felony animal cruelty charges. If convicted, he may be punished with up to three years in a state prison, one year in a county prison or fined $20,000.
The puppy's death does not increase Warner's charges, DeSousa said."
