7 Weeks Of Torture For Josela Posada's Baby Son

A 30-year-old Reno mother of two is behind bars, accused of fatally abusing her 7-week-old son who had multiple, visible injuries that were both new and old, police said.

Sgt. Chuck Lovitt, of the Robbery/Homicide unit, said the Feb. 13 death of Kristopher Posada was one of the worst instances of child abuse he’s seen.

“Child homicides by and large are usually a single type of injury inflicted once out of frustration or anger,” Lovitt said. “This was not the case. The injuries inflicted upon this child were over time, and he was only seven weeks old.

“You can assume he was being tortured a good part of his short life,” he said. “This is one of the worst child abuse cases I’ve seen. It’s shocking.”

After a week long investigation, Lovitt said detectives determined the baby died of “non-accidental, violent trauma” that was inflicted upon him. Because the investigation is on-going, Lovitt declined to discuss details of the injuries. He did say the infant suffered multiple types of injuries.

The baby’s mother, Josela Posada, was arrested Tuesday night in Sparks on suspicion of murder and child abuse causing substantial bodily harm.

Police said Posada offered no explanation for the many injuries the boy suffered. Officers were summoned to her apartment about 5 a.m., Feb. 13 after she called a friend reporting the child was cold and not breathing, after having been put to sleep the night before.

Posada, who does not speak English, is employed as a housekeeper at the Riverwood Apartments on Kuenzli Street, where she also lived with the infant and its 15-month-old sibling, police said. That child was placed in the care of the county’s social service after the baby’s death.

Lovitt said that Posada did have a teen girl baby-sit for her, and that girl has been cleared from any suspicion. Posada, he said, explained away the boy’s injuries to the baby-sitter, who was naive to any suspected abuse.

"It was in the region where the diaper would be, which is why she indicated it was a diaper rash, but our experience tells us it was probably not a diaper rash, but maybe water burns from hot water," said Lt. Mike Whan with the Reno Police Department.

Police say Josela Posada told them she put her baby to bed, and when she woke up, her baby was cold to the touch. When officers arrived at her apartment, they say baby Kristopher had burns and internal injuries, which the coroner later identified with shaken baby syndrome, a cause of death the police say is all too common.

An autopsy revealed the boy died of inflicted head trauma, and had brain injuries similar to what experts say are related to shaking a child, records show. He had injuries in various stages of healing, from days to weeks. Kristopher suffered broken ribs, and first and second-degree burns to his torso and genitals.

During earlier interviews with police, Posada blamed the burns on “diaper rash” and said she shook him a few times when he was crying, but did not hurt him. She claimed he did not have visible injuries. Later, she said he was accidentally burned the day before his death when she gave him a bath in too hot water. Posada eventually told police the boy had previously fallen a couple times, “hard” on his head.

According to court records, Kristopher’s well-being had been in question by neighbors and apartment complex staff since Jan. 27 when they heard the baby screaming as if he were in pain, and learned he had not been eating. When they offered to help Posada get the boy medical attention, she refused.

The next day Posada went to the Reno Pregnancy Center without the child, and was told by a nurse to take the boy to urgent care, or an emergency room after she reported he would not eat. Police said there are no records of the boy receiving medical care since his birth in December at Renown Regional Medical Center.

The day before the boy died, Feb. 12, a teenage baby-sitter noticed he had “open blisters” and redness to his groin and genital area, court records show. The baby-sitter said he was vomiting, was crying excessively and had no appetite. But Posada told the girl it was diaper rash and was using an ointment to treat the area.

Later that day, a neighbor heard Kristopher crying excessively from Posada’s apartment about 10:30 p.m., which is when Posada told police he had been sleeping. Posada later said Kristopher fell on his head that night when her daughter pulled him by the legs out of his high chair.

“Ms. Posada admitted she had lied to investigators because she was fearful of the consequences if she were truthful,” according to what detectives wrote in a probable cause arrest declaration.

I must be stupid, so can someone please explain to me just how a 7 week old child "falls down alot" Also, my kids must be retarded or something because at just 7 weeks, neither of them were sitting in a high chair. And, just for the record, if plucking your eyebrows too much causes one to become an evil, murderous bitch, I shall no longer pluck.

I have to admit, the eyebrows were the first thing I noticed about her too. I just don't get that drawn on look in anyone under 50.

A memorial service for Kristopher Posada has been scheduled for 2 p.m., March 6, at the Wilbur D. May Arboretum Labyrinth Garden at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park in Reno.

Hmm, since she abused and killed her 7 week old, what do you think the odds are that she harmed her 15 month old. I'm very curious how that child is doing and if they found any new or old injuries on him. I know 15 months is young, but I pray he/she wasn't around for the abuse/murder of the baby.

Kristopher in his whole 7 weeks of life likely never got a single chance to escape being in pain. Can you imagine? Can you even fathom seven weeks of excruciating pain?

gotta remember the 1st article stated the bb-sitter was 15....at 15 she prolly blieved the mother when told it was 'severe diaper rash' ...some 15 yr olds r very sheltered...had that been me at 15 i prolly woulda blieved it too...it all depends on the experience of said teen...just a thought

When they are born,we are to be there to love them, feed them, keep them warm, and safe. This dirty twat, she burned him, she hit him, she KILLED him. He was only 7 weeks old, yikes. 7 weeks was his entire lifetime, and in those 7 weeks, he knew no love, no kisses, no nurturing. MAKES ME FUCKING CRAZY ANGRY.

May she be ripped to shreds in jail, and her pain be longer than 7 weeks. When she closes her fucking eyes, may she not find no comfort in sleeping. I hope she dreams of her baby boy crying, screaming in pain for the rest of her worthless life. No relief for her just a life of pain, like she did to her innocent child.

I agree! Oh, and congrats on your sweet little addition! My oldest son's birthday is Feb 23 as well. It breaks my heart thinking of how this baby should have been nurtured and protected. It also sickens me beyond words.

In a mere 7 weeks??? An infant can't even cry at full volume when that young. They have these little baby cries that sound...for lack of a better word....soft. Babies that young basically eat, sleep and excrete, why in the hell would she feel the need to shake or scald a baby that young? It's not like the baby frustrated her beyond control.

She has shown she understands her actions were wrong and sought to cover them up. That shows premeditation and intent to harm and/or kill. Fry her.

A prosecutor announced Thursday that his office won't be seeking the death penalty against a 30-year-old Reno mother of two charged with the torture and child-abuse murder of her infant son.

During a short hearing in Washoe District Court, Deputy District Attorney Elliott Sattler said Josela Posada will continue forward with a May 9 first-degree murder trial. She remains in Washoe County Jail without bail and has an immigration hold. Posada's young daughter is in the care of relatives, authorities said.

Posada, who allegedly is in the country illegally from El Salvador, is charged with fatally shaking and burning her 7-week-old son, Kristopher.

According to testimony from a preliminary hearing, she never wanted to have the boy, referred to him using a gay slur and admitted to striking the child to quiet his cries.
