
MT. PLEASANT, Tenn. – A local teacher is behind bars in Maury County, charged with second degree murder in the death of her husband.
Maury Armstrong, Jr., 42, was shot and killed in a wooded area near Arrow Lake in Mt. Pleasant Saturday night.
His estranged wife, 38-year-old Shawn Armstrong, a first grade teacher at Riverside Elementary School in Columbia, is charged with second degree murder.
According to investigators, Armstrong, called 911 and told dispatchers she shot her husband.
Neighbors describe Armstrong as a quiet woman, who never seemed to have any problems.
Okalene Russell lives next door to the Armstrong's home on Hilltop Road in Columbia and had a hard time believing the news.
"Oh God, I mean I'm in shock," she told News 2. I mean I don't know what in the world, what was it about? I just can't believe that's them. I mean that's just that's just horrible."
According to neighbors, the couple lived together in the Columbia home for years and has three children.
Neighbors, however, said in recent months, Shawn Armstrong moved out and that the couple was separated.
Armstrong is being held at the Maury County Jail on $500,000 bond.
