ZION, Ill. (Lake County News-Sun) ― Zion police have charged a 19-year old man in the death of his four-month-old daughter.

Larnell D. Mace of the 1600 block of Lorelei in north suburban Zion is charged with two counts of First Degree Murder in the death of his daughter, four-month-old Jasmine Mace.

Jasmine died Wednesday of what was initially thought to be an infectious disease, because she had been to the hospital on numerous occasions with bronchitis symptoms, according to Lake County Coroner Dr. Richard Keller. But an autopsy Thursday revealed injuries consistent with physical abuse of the child, Keller said.

"She suffered internal injuries and internal bleeding related to trauma," Keller said Friday afternoon. "We have ruled the death a homicide."

After Mace was told he was going to be charged with first-degree murder, he changed his version of events. In a final statement he gave police, he said he had punched Jasmine between five and six times because she wouldn't stop crying.

Well, it would if you hit them hard enough.....I like to use the sleeping aid generically known as Mommy's Backhand, when my angels refuse to go to sleep at night. Zion man accused of killing infant daughter had 'upbringing from hell,' attorney says

A Zion man accused of beating his infant daughter to death last month is a ward of the state who survived "the upbringing from hell" as a foster child, his attorney said at his arraignment hearing Wednesday in Lake County Court.

Larnell Mace, 19, was physically and sexually abused while in foster care since his early childhood, said his attorney, Jed Stone.

"He is the poster child for the deficiencies of the foster program in Illinois," Stone said. "His past has definitively led him to this current tragedy."

Mace, of the 1600 block of Loralei Drive, pleaded not guilty to nine counts of first-degree murder in connection with the death of the 4-month-old, Jasmine. If convicted he could face life in prison.

Prosecutors say Mace initially told investigators he stepped on Jasmine accidentally, but later changed his account to say he struck her five or six times when she wouldn't stop crying.

Judge John Phillips set Mace's trial for Aug. 11.
