Detention teacher Hannah Wheeling murdered

FOX 5 has learned of a possible break in a murder at a Maryland youth detention facility.
Sources say a 13-year-old is in custody at another Maryland juvenile detention center.

Investigators are calling him the prime suspect in the case and say they believe he acted alone.

The teen's motive remains unknown. The state medical examiners have ruled the death of a Cheltenham youth facility teacher a homicide.

The victim, 65 year old Hannah Wheeling of Bel Air Maryland, was found Thursday morning by a staff member outside the Murphy School Building where she taught.

The autopsy revealed Wheeling died of multiple blunt force trauma injuries.

Maryland State Police continue to investigate conducting interviews and examining evidence.
They say at this point no one has been charged.

A boy who was 13 when he allegedly beat a teacher to death in a state juvenile detention facility in Prince George's County in February was formally charged Wednesday with first-degree murder and first-degree rape.

In a hearing in Circuit Court in Upper Marlboro, Prince George's County prosecutors said they have filed papers seeking to try the boy, who this month turned 14, as an adult.

Circuit Court Judge C. Philip Nichols Jr. scheduled a hearing on that issue for August 27. If the teen is tried as a juvenile and found "involved" -- the equivalent of guilty -- he could be held until he is 21. If the case is moved to adult court and he is found guilty, he could be sentenced to life in prison.

Wheeling, 65, of Bel Air, Md., was found beaten to death outside the facility’s Murphy Cottage on Feb. 18 just before 8 a.m.

A state police spokesman said at the time that she died from “multiple blunt-force trauma injuries. It also appeared that Wheeling had been sexually assaulted, law enforcement sources said.

The boy was big enough to have overpowered Wheeling, law enforcement sources said.

From all the reports on this story, the ppl who run the damn facility should be charged or forced for further safety actions. The building is a juvenile facility where obviously offendors of all sorts are dangerous and have done something wrong to be put there. The parking area is unlit, no security cameras surrounding many of the buildings, and a 1 - 7 teacher:student ratio!
This might have been avoided if they took proper safety precautions and actually valued its employees and their well being. its a shame.

Also, there is report that the now 14 yr old was a young black boy and Wheeling was white. Much debate over the racial statistics involved on the facility.
Old news but wasn't posted here.

Sad to think that Wheeling was supposed to retire this year too.

The boy accused of killing a teacher at the Cheltenham Youth Facility in February was left unattended by staff members for an hour on the day of the slaying, according to a report released Friday by the inspector general of Maryland's Department of Juvenile Services.

Investigators believe that the youth beat and strangled Hannah Wheeling, 65, during that hour, police have said.

The report provides new details about the circumstances surrounding the slaying. Wheeling's body was found about 8 a.m. Feb. 18 outside the center's Murphy Cottage, which is just beyond the fence at the youth facility.

The inspector general's report says a Cheltenham staff member saw Wheeling inside a classroom about 4 p.m. Feb. 17. Wheeling appeared to be preparing to leave work, and the teenager was sitting in the back of the classroom.

The staff member observed Wheeling and the suspect while standing in a hallway between the classroom and a game room and was talking on his cellphone at the time, the report says. When the staff member finished his phone call, he went back into the game room, where he had been supervising 13 other youths, and left Wheeling alone with the boy, the report says.

Sometime between 4 and 4:10 p.m., Wheeling stepped into the game room and asked for a volunteer to clean the blackboard, the report says. A youth went into the room, cleaned the blackboard and returned to the game room about 10 minutes later, the report says.

About 5 p.m., a Cheltenham staff member saw the suspect near a stairway that leads to the classroom and the game room, the report says. The staff member said the boy was "sweaty, red faced, and seemed nervous," the report says. When the staff member asked him what he was doing there, he responded that he was "looking for Ms. Wheeling," the report says.

Staff members at Cheltenham are not supposed to leave detainees unsupervised, according to Department of Juvenile Services protocol. In March, officials announced that two staff members had been fired and three others had been disciplined for not following safety procedures on the day Wheeling was killed.

A 15-year-old was sentenced to 85 years in prison for killing and sexually assaulting his teacher at a Maryland youth facility, MyFoxDC reported.
Brian Wonsom pleaded guilty on Friday to killing his teacher Hannah Wheeling with a cinder block when he was 13.

"It's a tremendous tragedy," Prince George's County State's Attorney Angela Alsobrooks said. "And there’s no answer for why a 13-year-old boy is capable, would be capable, of killing and raping in the manner that he did, but we are now satisfied that we have removed the threat from our community. It is sad on so many levels.” Court records show that Wonsom also pleaded guilty to a second violent attack that originally was not made public.

Wonsom was being held at Cheltenham Youth Facility, which serves youth awaiting trial or court disposition, after his mother found stolen items in his possession.
Wheeling’s bloody body was found outside a cottage on February 18, 2010. Additional evidence, including a bloody sweatshirt with matching DNA to the victim, was found by state police investigators under a stairwell. The name inside the sweatshirt read “Brian Wonsom, ” the report said.
