It's true, the adverts ARE louder than the programmes.

It is a phenomenon that has annoyed television audiences for years - the advert break begins and suddenly the volume is cranked up.

Despite numerous complaints, broadcasters have previously tried to suggest that the jump in noise is a figment of viewers' imaginations.

But now the Advertising Standards Authority has proven it exists and is taking action against ITV.

The regulator today ruled that eight commercials shown during a recent broadcast of the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes on ITV3 were too loud and broke the Advertising Standards Code.

HA! I knew it!! I knew it wasn't just my imagination!

Is it a world-wide phenomenon, or just in the UK?

    Nope. World wide.

I freaking hate it. I turn the volume up on some tv shows cause it sounds really low, if I'm slow to grab the remote, the ads come blaring as if they are yelling. I especially hate this at night and I'm trying to watch a movie without waking anybody.

Our TV has some sort of "sound leveler" feature that has made this go away somewhat. Too bad the one in our bedroom doesn't have it.

I recall, for quite some time, they sold DVRs that would edit out the commercials based on the sudden jumps in volume level. When something shifted a few decibels upward suddenly, that section was edited out of the final stored recording.

So, sometimes their attempts really only serve to better our attempts to filter them.

That would not work real well on my husband's bang-bang-shoot-em-up-kill-everything-in-sight action flicks. I am forever thinking the bedroom is under siege. Those DVRs would edit out what he calls "the good parts".

LOL Sounds like it would still benefit you, however.
