Alejandro Duque, 35, was arrested for investigation of public intoxication, trespassing and disturbing the peace Tuesday and placed into a holding cell at the Salt Lake County Jail where inmates are put to sober up before being booked. Salt Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Mike DeNiro said Duque was "significantly intoxicated" when he was brought in.

After being in the cell for about an hour, Duque removed a sock from his jacket and stretched it "to test the strength" of the sock, according to jail records. He then "placed the sock around the neck of a prisoner and began to strangle him," jail documents state.

The victim was asleep and lying face down at the time of the attack, DeNiro said. Duque put his knee into the victim's back "to obtain an extreme amount of force" and attempted to strangle him with the sock. Deputies monitoring the cell from a surveillance camera rushed in and pulled Duque off.

DeNiro said a motive for the attack was unknown, and there did not appear to be any relationship between Duque and the victim.
