Children Left Alone For 3 Days After Single Dads Arrest

Three children, aged eight, 10 and 13, were left alone at home for three days before Christmas after their single-parent father was arrested at a hospital -- and no one was notified.

While they were alone, one of the children, a 10-year-old boy, was badly burned after spilling spaghetti on his bare chest as he removed it from the microwave oven, the child said in an interview. There was no telephone at the house.

The children's father, Randy Lafond, blames the arresting officer for not informing anyone, but Lafond also appears to have missed opportunities to ensure the children were safe.
Saskatoon police Chief Clive Weighill said he is aware of the allegation and has launched an internal investigation.

"Standard procedure is if you go to a home and their kids are there you call social services. . . . I don't know if that's a true portrayal of what happened. We have no way to defend ourselves until we have it investigated," Weighill said.

The children -- Randy, 13, Bryton, 10, and Shelayne, 8 -- said they were sad and worried when their father and no other grown-ups came to visit.

Randy awoke the first night to the sound of Bryton crying.

Bryton said he had heated a flat container of frozen spaghetti in the microwave and was shirtless when he removed it. The container folded at the centre and collapsed, causing it to spill onto his chest. The resulting burn blistered and wrinkled his skin, he said.

Bryton said he held a bag of frozen corn to his chest to ease the pain that got "badder, then better, then badder" over the three days they remained alone.

The children's mother arrived about the same time as their aunt did on the afternoon of Christmas Eve. Their mother drove Bryton to the hospital that day, where he was treated and released, said Randy's mother, Winona Lafond.

In a telephone interview from jail this week, Randy Lafond, 39, said he asked the police officer who arrested him to notify his mother, but he did not get any assurance from the officer.

Lafond said he declined his right to call a lawyer when he was booked in at the police station that day.

Lafond was sick with a suspected case of food poisoning and didn't call his mother from jail during the next three days, before the children were discovered.

Methinks dad is a waste and was entirely more concerned about his own ass, not his children.

I have no thanks but I agree Aslan,if hes looking for easy money and a lawsuit its gonna be hard to prove that he attempted to get someone there.I think he figured he would be out within days and the 13 yr old would cover him.But they got caught and the child was burnt.The burn alone is child neglect in my mind.I was burnt around the same time as that kid by cheese on my arm and have a horrible nasty scare where it cooked my flesh.I cant imagine a child having a burn like that on the chest and stomach!!And nobody around to tend to him!!I hope they dont give them back to him

Sorry, I'm not going after the popo on this one. He had numerous chances to tell someone about his kids... and choose not too. I hope he never sees them again.

Yeah this was his doing,Im not even convinced he told police the kids were there b.c I have no doubt in my head that the cops wouldnt call Social Services.A old neighbor of mine was busted b/c her hubby had a stash of pot he was selling about 10 yrs ago .I had moved away from the apt building but she called me ,actually the cop did and she wanted to know if I could take the baby so it wouldnt go to childrens aide.And the police actually brought Felicia to me and came in and peeked around a bit,didnt search my home or anything but he really checked it out from the foyer.And I had her almost a week until the grandmother could get here to the city and pick her up( i wanted to keep her)

What was he arrested for? Unless food poisoning is a crime, I'm thinking drugs or something.
Why doesn't mom have custody? Why didn't the kids call someone?
This just is...dunno. Can't wrap my mind around it.
See what I'm thinking is the kids didn't call anyone because they are used to him not being around for days at a time and mom isn't exactly the most reliable.
Then again, I'm not there so I don't know.

I have no clue but Im thinking the kids are used to being alone and he didnt think he would be held as long as he was.But mom and grandma both showed up.Not sure of status of mom except he was a single dad

They did indeed show up...3 days later. Which leads me to think that yeah, the kids are used to being left alone. What 13 yr old doesn't know how to use a phone?
Bless his heart, from the looks of it he's used to being the one in charge, which is why he didn't seek treatment for that burn immediately.
Yet dad has no problem hauling ass to the hospital for food poisoning. Give me a break.

Yep,this is probrably their life with the 13 yr old playing parent.I worked with a broad with 5 kids oldest 12-13 at the time youngest was 5.She would disappear for days at a time leaving 12 yr old in charge until our boss called on her.I had no clue until he called ,I was new to the city

I wouldn't leave my 13 year old in charge of a cat. He's not bad, but he's busy doing his own thing. I imagine he'd have limited patience if left in charge of his siblings, fuck knows what I'd be coming home to. All kids are different though, I could've looked after a few kids and cooked their dinner when I was 11.

i agree with u Evervigilant....my oldest is now 15 and he the most irresponsible one out of the 3....my 13 yr old daughter on the other hand is very responsible....i trust her to watch over her 9 yr old sister for the 5 hours i have to work on saturdays...most times their dad is home but sometimes he has to work then too...i wouldnt trust my son to watch my dog...he would rather go hang out with his friends....so it all goes to show...different kids=different degrees of maturity

Dear Goddess, alone, scared, hungry, injured and in pain for three days :/ ; what brave little souls they are, and my heart hurts for them and all that they have endured.

Their single custodial sperm donor is nothing more than a selfish, parasitic, child abusing pile of decaying shite. I'm willing to bet a chocolate bar that he intentionally failed to notify *anyone* about the unsupervised status of his children due to the fact that he did not want social services involved.
Because the fucker, I mean "father", was arrested at a hospital, and his children were home alone at the time of the arrest, *HE KNEW* - 1) LE had no way of knowing that the children even existed when they collared his despicable and diseased ass;
and 2) had LE or social services found this out when he was arrested, he would have been charged at that time with child neglect, lost custody pending further investigation, and most likely and importantly to him - the lo$$ of "free" monthly income.

IMO, the "food poisoning illness" posing as his fail excuse is another piss puddle peppered with cow patties - I wouldn't leave my *pets* alone for 3 days without getting notice for someone to be with them for any illness/injury short of coma or brain death.
I hope that these children are placed together in a permanent custody araingement with a loving family ASAP, and that they never have to see Randy Lafond again.

Also I never saw anything in the article but if its on a reservation(millions out west) or if he is indian the tribal leaders will step in and want to handle it themselves in a sentencing circle.My moms indian,born on reservation in the Soo but not raised on one
