Ninth Grader In Critical Condition After Being Shot At Discovery Middle School

Todd Brown, 14, rushed to Huntsville Hospital after being shot Friday afternoon; another ninth grader in custody

MADISON, AL - Madison Police say a ninth grade student is in critical condition after being shot inside Discovery Middle School on Friday afternoon. Todd T. Brown, 14, was shot in the ninth grade hallway. The alleged shooter is another ninth grader. He is in custody.

Brown is in Huntsville Hospital. Madison City School officials are at the hospital with his family.

Madison authorities held a news conference shortly before 5pm Friday to release the latest information about the shooting. They will hold another news conference at approximately 8:30pm.

Dr. Dee Fowler, Superintendent of Madison City Schools, said the shooting happened about 1:45, during a class change in the ninth grade hallway. Fowler said a ninth grade student shot Brown. As soon as that happened, a school resource officer rushed to see what happened, as well a school nurse. Emergency personnel responded to the school immediately, and were with the injured students by 1:48pm. They came from just across the street from the school, from Madison Fire Station 2.

Dr. Fowler said the school immediately went into an emergency procedure they hoped they'd never have to use. They immediately went into lock down and made sure everyone was safe.

The injured student, Brown, was rushed to Huntsville Hospital. Emergency responders had already notified the trauma team, and hospital workers were waiting for him.

Fowler said the school started to release students to parents around 2:15, after they determined the school was secure.

    He died :(

MADISON, Ala. — A ninth-grader was shot by another student during a class change at a north Alabama middle school Friday has died at a hospital, officials said.

Todd Brown, 14, was shot about 1:45 p.m. and taken by ambulance from Discovery Middle School to Huntsville Hospital, where he died, said hospital spokeswoman Kristen Bishop. She wouldn't release any other details.

The suspected shooter was arrested inside in the school, where police are regularly stationed.

Police did not release the name of the alleged shooter, also a ninth-grader at the school, citing their ongoing investigation.

No one else was injured, school officials said. It wasn't immediately clear what prompted the gunfire.

"This was a singular incident," said Dee Fowler, the city school superintendent. He said churches are working with the school system to offer counseling throughout the weekend and counselors will be at the campus Monday.

Debbie Nalley has two grandsons at the school, including one in the ninth grade who sent a text message to his mother after the shooting.

"He said there was a boy who had his hand in his pocket, and when he pulled it out he shot this other boy in the head in the ninth-grade hall," Nalley said. "It's upsetting for all the kids."

Hannah Mannis told WHNT-TV that she and other students hunkered down in the dark while the school was on lockdown after the shooting. She said someone with Internet access on their cell phone learned there had been a shooting on campus and students started sending text messages to each other throughout the school.

"It was very scary for us. We turned off all the lights, got in a corner, locked the doors and we just couldn't do anything until we got further information," Mannis said in an interview outside the school.

"Everyone was screaming, everyone was freaking out and calling their parents and they said someone got shot," Mannis said.

About 1,000 students attend the school, which has 7th, 8th and 9th grades. Concerned parents were seen hurrying toward the campus, where yellow crime scene tape was wrapped around the parking lot.

Officials said emergency responders arrived at the school within two minutes of the 911 call.

Madison has about 38,500 residents, many of whom work in technology jobs related to NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center at Redstone Arsenal.

Suspect wanted out of the Crips Gang
MADISON - Both the suspect and victim in Friday's fatal Discovery Middle School shooting belonged to the same would-be gang, officials said Tuesday.

Speaking inside the school in front of a large poster with Todd Brown's picture and memorials written by students, authorities gave their fullest picture so far of the investigation.

Brown, 14, died Friday after being shot during a class change at the 1,001-student school. The suspect, also 14, has been charged with murder and is being held in a juvenile facility.
Police have identified fewer than 10 middle school boys, including the suspect and victim, "who wanted to possibly align themselves with some sort of national gang," Police Chief Larry Muncey said.

They didn't know how to join a real gang, Muncey said, so they "went online and learned how to walk and how to talk and how to dress."

The shooting followed the suspect's decision to get out of the gang, said Huntsville attorney Bruce Gardner, who is representing the young suspect in early legal proceedings.

Gardner said they called themselves Crips, the name of a real nationwide gang started in Los Angeles. It had "initiation rituals and renunciation rituals," Gardner said.

"Renunciation rituals" are what gang members go through to leave the gang, Gardner said.
