Two Broward County men told authorities they were inhaling canisters of nitrous oxide and getting high as they drove through the Keys, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies on Sunday evening arrested James Francois, 22, of Oakland Park, and a 16-year-old from Fort Lauderdale, at the 106 mile marker of U.S. 1. The Sun Sentinel is not identifying the teenage suspect because of his age.
Authorities said they got a call about two people throwing firecrackers from a truck along U.S. 1. Deputies located the vehicle and pulled it both over. The suspects gave the deputies permission to search the truck, where the officers found marijuana and 100 nitrous oxide canisters, the Sheriff's Office said.
The pair told deputies they had used 50 of the canisters to get high as they were driving, authorities said.
The two were booked on several charges, including inhaling dangerous chemicals; unlawful distribution of nitrous oxide; possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, and possession of marijuana.
