OCALA - A woman was arrested Saturday after reportedly leaving a 2-year-old child alone in a car for nearly two hours.

Karen Virginia Foley, 26, was charged with child neglect.

According to an Ocala police report, two people called 911 around 3:30 p.m. to report a child left alone in front of Game Stop at 1903 E. Silver Springs Blvd. When an officer arrived, a woman was waiting near a white Chevrolet Tracker with the child inside. She told police she had called 911 and stayed with the child for 20 minutes. The child was in a car seat.

Another woman reportedly told the officer she had parked near the Tracker and had gone shopping with her boyfriend for about an hour. When she came back to her car, her boyfriend noticed the child in the car, according to the report.

The car was unlocked and the woman told officers she checked on the child.

The woman also told the officer she went into every store in the plaza and had announcements made in attempt to find the baby's parents.

The car was registered to Foley, according to the report.

The officer remained with the child until after 4 p.m., when Foley and her two children returned to the car.

Foley reportedly told the officer she had only left her boyfriend's child in the car for a few minutes.

When she was arrested, Foley reportedly said she accidentally forgot the child in the car.

The incident was reported to the state Department of Children and Families.

I NEVER did this. I'd always leave an older child in the car to watch the younger ones. By the time that they're 5 years old, kids are ready to take on some responsibility, ya know?
Seriously, I hope that the boyfriend drops the evil step-mom/girlfriend. She couldn't even wait to marry him before she started showing favortism and treating his kid like shit.

I am hesitant to leave my 12 yr old in a car with my toddler... And that's only because of how much work it is right now to keep up with a very active toddler while this pregnant.

That being said, I hope Baby Mama really has it in for the girlfriend (I can't say the Dad, he entrusted that a woman who is a mother would do right by his child and he wasn't there). Though I am sure it is going to cause hella problems for him and if he were smart he'd dump her now. I hope he chooses his kid over his vagina.

I get especially angry when I think how smug she must have felt, trying to tell those people that she'd only left the kid in there for a couple of minutes... after they'd waited with him all that time. It's a little satisfying to imagine how panic must have set in when she realized they knew better.

Nah, I wouldn't think of leaving my 6 yo. alone for more than five with my 2 yo. Much can happen with kids alone. Maybe that's just me being paranoid, but in Texas, kids under the age of 7 yo. unattended for more than 5 min. is an offense. Due to extreme hot temps they are real clear on this. Kids can do all kinds of crazy shit in cars, leave it to my boys.

This poor baby. 2 hrs. long time to be left alone crying. I'd kick her ass until she'd get it straight that being a dumbass is unacceptable.

That was so reckless, OMG! Luckily concerned people were there to call the police and comfort him. That must have been terrifying for the child. Anything could have happened to him. To me it is like she was inviting tragedy. I literally could not friggin shop knowing any child, mine or otherwise, was in my car for two hours. What the hell was she thinking?

I shudder at the thought that someone I trust would be so careless with my kids, especially considering she is a mother herself. This seems kind of mean to me, but maybe I am wrong.

SO glad baby is alright - thanks to the people who got involved.

You left children alone in a car? Five year old's have to take responsibiliy? That is utterly irresponsible on your part. A five year old should not be left in a car let alone being responsible for younger siblings. What could be so important that you couldn't get the kids out of the car and take them with you?

@Lily I believe she was using the "delicate" form of sarcasm, rather than the "punch you in your face" form. Stick around here more often and you'll see that a lot of "us" like to use sarcasm in all forms. Whether we are literate when we do so...Well, that's not a guarantee.

I wasn't going to jump on this thread and make a comment because I saw that it was started in 2009. Then I realized that all of the recent postings are regarding a single ironic one. This is new to me. Usually a thread is resurrected by some tard defender.

That wouldn't stop folks from not recognizing sarcasm. They would just think it's just some weird formatting that someone used. If folks want to showcase that they are being sarcastic or facetious, they can just put in a signal like "/end sarcasm" or color it purple/non-black or use Ştrănģę Łeťŧērƨ already available.

People will still miss it and it's a bit insulting to the vast majority that DO recognize it without cues.

Y'all should know that I taught English, and am a professional writer. "Y'all" is a contraction of 'you all' and a Southern colloquialism that I use in casual communications such as this forum. It is not the Queen's English, but the British have plenty of colloquialisms that make little sense to an American. If you want to mock language usage, go find someone who writes in text-speak. That crap drives me bat-shit crazy.
