Loran Guzman left the kids home alone....again

A woman who police said left her two children home alone on the Far South Side has been charged with endangering their lives at the same time police were seeking her on a warrant in a similar case from last year.

Loran Guzman is charged with felony child endangerment according to police. She appeared before Cook County Judge Israel Desierto in Bond Court Sunday and had the $75,000 bail on the warrant in last year's case upheld.

Last year, Guzman pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor child endangerment charges in a case that also involved a marijuana possession charge that was dropped in her guilty plea, according to court records. There also was an order of protection against her in connection with the case.

Guzman's guilty plea brought her a conditional discharge, which would have allowed the charges to be dropped if she completed requirements of the discharge. But on Dec. 1, a warrant was issued for her arrest, according to court records.

The current case began when neighbor called police to say that a little girl was on the deck of Guzman's home. Police came to the home at 10:30 p.m. Friday and that girl, about 2 or 3 years old, wearing sweat pants and socks and wet from the snow, as well as another girl about the same age in an upstairs bedroom, left alone at the home

Thankfully nothing horrible happened to the children. I don't let my 4 year old girl and (almost) 7 year old boy go upstairs without me being in ear shot. Bad things happen all the time. Call me paranoid.

Paranoid! Giving children a little independence and leaving them home all alone are two way different things. One is good parenting the other is neglect and abuse.

Okay. This broad does not deserve her kids back. Obviously, she can't be bothered with them so it's time to give them to someone who will do their job as a caretaker. Enough chances with this woman. And while we're at it, sterilize her so she can't do this to any other kids.

    Hear, hear.

Upstairs? Seriously? Do your kids have a habit of flinging themselves off the second story? Do you have a latter propped up against the house giving boogeymen access?

There comes a point where a parent's concern begins to do harm to the children. Watch out for that.

Just a side note, my little brother would jump off the roof of our house regularly. When he was 3, mom caught him with a rope tied around his waist and the chimney. He was going to use it to bungee jump.

So, maybe some kids need supervision, but they'll usually make it obvious at an early age.
